Location: Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo – Environmental Services department. Full-time, 40 hrs/wk, 3rd shift. Benefits eligible.

About the role

As an Environmental Service Technician at Bronson Hospital, you will help maintain cleanliness and infection control across the hospital, ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize patient rooms (occupied and unoccupied), public areas, surgical areas, and other assigned spaces.
  • Stock supplies and keep equipment clean and in working order.
  • Follow safety and infection-control guidelines to maintain a clean and safe hospital environment.
  • Provide excellent service to hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Work closely with the Environmental Services Manager to complete tasks to the highest standards.
  • Follow detailed instructions and check work to meet quality standards.
  • Perform all cleaning functions involved in daily general cleaning and maintenance of patient rooms, operating rooms, ancillary areas, and departmental spaces following the system’s ten steps of cleaning as defined in the Environmental Services Department Manual.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all relevant laws, regulations per CDC, OSHA, the EPA, Joint Commission, and Bronson policies and procedures.
  • Follow all isolation procedures in isolation and contact-plus rooms.
  • Detail clean vents, fan fixtures, tops of windows, door frames, wall art, bumpers, furniture, and other areas as necessary.
  • Clean public areas including lobbies, waiting rooms, restrooms, elevators, utility rooms, exam rooms, offices, stairwells, and other assigned areas.
  • Collect and replace all sharps and black pharmacy box containers in patient care areas.
  • Document and maintain records of assigned cleaning tasks.
  • Restock supplies in assigned areas as needed.
  • Communicate information and requests to registered nurses and/or patient care assistants.
  • Provide exceptional service to patients, staff, families, and visitors while maintaining confidentiality of patient and unit data per HIPAA regulations.
  • Remove trash and soiled linen from assigned areas and transport to disposal area.
  • Keep work areas neat and orderly, clean equipment, and assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Operate mechanical floor equipment such as IMops, vacuums, sweepers, and other related environmental equipment.
  • Clean equipment and store in assigned locations.
  • Direct visitors as necessary.
  • Collect trays from patient rooms.
  • Coordinate cleaning activities with the department coordinator as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for own growth and development; attend regular staff meetings.
  • Actively participate in and support the Bronson Management System by attending huddles and adopting problem-solving methods.
  • Operate ultraviolet (UV) disinfection equipment (Surfacide UV Robot).
  • Collect, label, and organize all biomedical waste for pickup by the waste hauler (specific to BMH Lab, BSH, BLH & BLIRC).
  • Collect, transport, and take all recycling to compactor or comingle dumpster (specific to BMH Lab, BSH, BLH & BLIRC).
  • Transport waste to appropriate compactor or outside dumpster as needed.
  • Change privacy curtains where needed.
  • Round, inspect, and maintain all assigned areas within the scope of the facility, including lab work areas, offices, restrooms, waiting areas, patient procedure rooms, stairwells, receiving dock, ambulatory storage, EVS closets, BIO storage rooms, recycling areas, elevator landings, and elevator tracks.
  • Properly use and maintain all assigned floor care machinery, including auto scrubbers, corded and battery-powered vacuums, iMop, burnishers, and side-by-side scrubbers.
  • All other duties as assigned, which may include use of the trash compactor and emptying trash and linen chutes.

  • Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching required to perform job duties.
  • Regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally assist with heavier tasks.
  • Ability to work while standing on a stepladder at a height of four feet.
  • Good balance required for performing all duties.
  • Occasional exposure to risk of injury when working with electrical equipment.
  • Ability to walk stairs when necessary.
  • Occasionally work in confined spaces and occupied areas.
  • May experience occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries or handle emergency or crisis situations.
  • Required protective clothing may include gloves, eye protection, face protection, and shoe covers.
  • Michigan driver’s license and insurability may be required.
  • Previous experience in cleaning is a plus but not required.
