About the role
The EVS Technician is responsible for providing a safe care environment within a specialty area (surgical services/peri-operative suite, Pac U areas, etc.) by demonstrating the principles of cleaning, disinfection, and quality assurance to reduce harmful pathogens for the benefit of patients, visitors, and staff. The EVS Housekeeper, in accordance with organizational standards of quality, is an essential contributor to cleaning, disinfection, infection prevention, and patient experience.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for cleaning and disinfection of specialty units & equipment, including but not limited to Surgical Services, Endoscopy, and Pac U.
- Performs duties while demonstrating a working knowledge of healthcare cleaning and disinfecting principles, proper and safe chemical use, equipment handling, and labor-saving products.
- Adheres to all organization safety, risk management, and infection control standards while promoting a safety culture.
- Accountable for accurately maintaining all appropriate logs and checklists/sheets.
- Responsible for cleaning and disinfection of equipment and assignment areas according to procedures, policies, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting requirements for highly sensitive environments.
- Demonstrates understanding of training and education related to evidence-based recommendations in accordance with AHE, APIC, AORN, CDC, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory bodies.
- Maintains supplies and equipment by properly stocking and restocking the environmental services cart.
- Removes waste and transports it to appropriate disposal areas while identifying proper waste streams (regulated medical, recycle, solid, and hazardous).
- Follows all environmental and infection prevention practices, including proper cleaning and disinfection protocols, hand hygiene, standard & isolation precautions, and proper donning and doffing of PPE.
- Recognizes and adheres to patient privacy requirements (HIPAA).
- Demonstrates personal accountability and the ability to identify and utilize appropriate resources to resolve problems.
- Demonstrates knowledge of facility safety requirements.
- Operates and properly maintains all EVS tools and equipment needed to clean and disinfect the environment.
- Assists in onboarding new Environmental Services Technicians as requested.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 1-year healthcare environmental services experience.
- Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
- Ability to distinguish between levels of disinfection and perform low and intermediate-level disinfection.
- Ability to explain orally or in writing the differences between levels of disinfection and perform intermediate-level disinfection where required.
- Ability to read/write English at 6th-9th grade level preferred.
- Strong communication skills, including respectfully listening to and respecting the viewpoints of others.
Physical Requirements
- PPD (TB test) required upon hiring.
- Blood draw to check for antibodies of Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chickenpox, and Hepatitis B.
- COVID vaccination required.
- Flu shot required.
