About the role
Support teachers, students, staff, and administration to ensure all students achieve academic learning gains. The Instructional Assistant provides direct instructional assistance to students of limited English proficiency while maintaining all company policies and procedures for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Responsibilities
- Enroll students in the regular school program or ESOL Program based on the Home Language Survey.
- Administer Language Proficiency Tests and document scores as specified in program procedures.
- Notify student’s teacher(s) of ESOL status, share test results, and provide relevant educational background information.
- Notify and invite parents to participate at times specified in program procedures.
- Ensure students are enrolled with eligible teachers and inform parents of this placement.
- Collect and enter required data for each student’s plan into the computer system.
- Access prior school records to assist in developing the English Language Learner (ELL) Plan.
- Develop an ELL Plan for each student identified as an English Language Learner.
- Review student progress and identify those ready to exit the ESOL Program.
- Assess and document limited English Proficiency for students not exited within three years to ensure continued funding eligibility.
- Review progress of former ELL students and refer under-performing students to the ELL Committee.
- Assist with communication between school and parents of ELL students.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and student records at all times.
- Maintain documentation, records, files, and reports of ELLs in compliance with district/state guidelines.
- Provide home language tutorial assistance in basic subject areas under teacher or Assistant Principal direction.
- Collaborate with teachers, staff, and administrators to ensure orderly school operations.
- Perform clerical duties such as copying, filing, displaying student work, and answering telephones during instructional sessions.
- Assist with arrival, dismissal, and attendance procedures, including verification and follow-up calls.
- Support initiatives to meet defined FTE enrollment and attendance goals.
- Assist in the orientation process as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by administrators to support student educational goals.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or industry certification.
- Previous experience working with or ability to work with over-age and adult learners.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Written and oral proficiency in a language other than English.
- Sensitivity to the special needs of language-minority students.
- Interest in and respect for a variety of cultures.
- Experience in customer service preferred.
- Ability to foster positive behavioral models for young adults.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- In schools with 15 or more students who speak the same language, the paraprofessional must be a speaker of that language.
