About the Role

As an ESOL Coordinator, you will support the school's instructional program by identifying students of limited English proficiency, planning an appropriate developmental program for them, and implementing instruction in accordance with state law and regulation as well as CSUSA curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnostic Evaluation
    • Identifies students as Limited English proficient (LEP) in accordance with state law, regulation, and CSUSA policy by evaluating available test and observational data, consulting with staff, reviewing registration forms, and considering recommendations from other personnel.
    • Uses appropriate standardized test instruments, informal diagnostic tasks, and observations to assess students' level of English proficiency.
  • Instructional Planning
    • Develops an instructional program to increase the acquisition of oral and written communication skills.
    • Selects appropriate instructional materials and media to achieve program goals.
    • Groups students for instruction in cooperation with the principal, considering each student's English proficiency level.
    • Prepares for assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request.
    • Participates in curriculum planning with other staff members during designated meetings.
    • Takes necessary precautions to protect supplies, equipment, materials, and facilities needed for the instructional program.
  • Instruction
    • Meets with and instructs students according to devised schedules.
    • Employs instructional media and techniques to increase oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Regularly assesses students' English proficiency progress.
    • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by CSUSA policy and state regulations.
  • Student Management
    • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
    • Implements relevant policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
    • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order fairly.
    • Maintains student confidentiality.
  • School and Community Relations
    • Establishes cooperative relations and communicates with parents/guardians as required by state law and CSUSA policy.
    • Cooperates and shares professionally with administration and staff.
    • Attends parent communication activities (e.g., Back-to-School Night, conferences) as directed by the principal.
    • Informs parents of ESOL program placement in accordance with state law and CSUSA procedures.
    • Provides progress reports to classroom teachers and parents as required.
    • Communicates with classroom teachers regarding objectives and materials for each student.
    • Provides consultation and training to staff about the cultural background of LEP students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent.
  • Valid teaching eligibility in ESOL.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Successful results of criminal and employment background check.
  • Previous experience in student instruction.

  • Effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills.
  • Commitment to researching, evaluating, and implementing best practices.

Work Environment

  • Usual office working conditions.
  • Travel within or outside of state may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
