ESL Test Examiner Position - Part-Time

About the role

The Danbury Public School District maintains a Centralized Registration location for all newly entering students at the Family and Community Engagement Center. This position administers language testing to determine if a student is an English Learner (EL), including the initial English Proficiency Assessment for K-12 students registering through the Central Registration Center. The role also involves reviewing school transcripts and previous English proficiency records for students entering from other U.S. districts. As time permits, the position may expand into community outreach, providing information to community groups about the ESL Center, registration, and orientation processes.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain an English Proficiency Assessment appointment calendar with registrars.
  • Administer the English Proficiency Assessment, score and enter assessment data, and communicate results to students' assigned schools.
  • Adhere to the CSDE "Home Language Survey Guidelines" to determine eligibility for language support services and make initial placement recommendations.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with parents/guardians to discuss assessment results, available language support services, and opt-in options.
  • Maintain accurate student test records and preserve confidentiality.
  • Verify and comply with district, state, and federal registration laws.
  • Coordinate with the Coordinator of ESL/ESL Center Director and ESL Department Heads regarding testing data.
  • Create and distribute reports on incoming enrollments and manage enrollment data for reporting.
  • Participate in and provide training on the administration and scoring of the English Proficiency Assessment.
  • Act as a liaison between parents, community members, and the ESL Center, troubleshoot registration questions, and assist with outreach materials and information sessions.
  • Translate as needed and support Central Registration Center Registrars.
  • Complete additional related projects as directed by the Coordinator of ESL Services and ESL Center Director.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) best practices.
  • Familiarity with Connecticut's English Proficiency Assessment.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese (required).
  • Experience with PowerSchool or similar District Student Data Management System (preferred).
  • Experience working with non-English speaking parents and students in a public school setting.

Pay

$22/hour.

Schedule

  • Part-time work during the regular school year (up to 35 hours/week).
  • Exempt, non-union position.
  • On call, as needed.
