About the role
The ESL Instructor provides specialized instruction for various state and federally funded programs intended to engage a diverse population of learners. The position supports the development of refugees and immigrants' ability to effectively perform courses of study in English and acquire the English language. It is a part-time position.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and provide instruction in English that meets state and federal standards
- Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with the instructional program to ensure learners meet and exceed learning targets
- Create a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages learner responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of the learner
- Administer academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating learners' progress towards meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Education or a related discipline (or three years of TESOL experience)
- Availability to work on a variable schedule, including nights and weekends
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and build lasting relationships and partnerships with program and field office staff
- Sensitivity to the development stages and well-being of ELLs
- Proficiency in using MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel, and database programs
- Ability to facilitate group discussion, analyze situations, and draw conclusions
- Highly adaptable and flexible with the ability to multi-task and prioritize in a demanding work environment
- Dedication to human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and displaced people
- Good sense of humor and pleasant, diplomatic manner is desired
Training Requirements
- Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training
- Satisfactory completion of funder required trainings upon hire and on an annual basis
- Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources
Physical Demands
- Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity
- Prolonged periods of sitting and standing
- Sustained visual and mental applications and demands
- Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying
- Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements)
