Description

PetVet Care Centers, Memphis Veterinary Specialists & Emergency is seeking an ER Veterinary Technician to support hospital operations.

Responsibilities

  • Determine animal requirements by conducting brief exams and collecting medical histories, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
  • Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, wound care, and post-operative monitoring for critically ill patients.
  • Support patient examinations and operations by assembling supplies, securing patients, and restraining them; assist as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Provide excellent patient care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration.
  • Obtain and verify medications; ensure patients have food and water, clean rooms, cages, and equipment; observe for clinical signs of disease.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing and disinfecting areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, following standards and procedures, and complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintain medical records by documenting patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database accurately and promptly.
  • Communicate with pet owners about patient status, as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional journals.
  • Release pets to their owners as directed; ensure they are clean and properly groomed before release.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager or practice.

Emergency

  • Assist veterinarians with various emergency procedures and critical care situations.
  • Monitor vitals, place catheters, take x-rays, clean wounds, apply casts or bandages, give injections, and take blood samples.

Schedule

  • 3 shifts per week, 12-14 hours/shift.
  • Nights and weekend shift differential (additional) hourly pay.
  • Shifts include weekends.
  • Overnight schedule from 8:00PM-8:00AM with at least 1 weekend night.
  • Rotating shifts between Dayshift, Nightshift, and Swing shift.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT).
  • Experience in ER is preferred.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

Position Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of preparing, monitoring, and recovering pets receiving surgery, as well as advanced veterinary nursing.
  • Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
  • Understanding and limiting potential exposure to bites, scratches, and injuries.
  • Able to restrain patients according to standard procedures.
  • Able to fill prescriptions and monitor sedation procedures as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing stress, illness, or pain.
  • Communicate and approach job duties in a professional and mature manner.
  • This is a strenuous job requiring a lot of lifting, cleaning, and constant motion.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation and/or extended periods standing and/or walking.
  • May include some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Some tasks involve extended periods of physically demanding work, usually involving lifting or carrying moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds).
