Responsibilities

  • Aids in the delivery of patient care as a nursing team member.
  • Performs specific and nonspecific patient care tasks as directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Assists in the transport of patients as needed and assists patients with activities of daily living.
  • Obtains and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, finger stick blood glucose) accurately and reports abnormalities to the primary nurse promptly.
  • Adheres to hospital infection control practices, policies, and performance improvement practices.
  • Collects, prepares, labels, and delivers specimens to the lab in a timely manner according to procedures.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation by utilizing unassigned time to perform duties and facilitate smooth departmental functioning.
  • Initiates and discontinues cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Obtains EKG tracings, as requested, and submits to providers in a timely manner.
  • Accurately performs point-of-care testing and quality control testing for waived tests such as Accucheck, urine dipsticks, urine pregnancy, and rapid strep testing, and records results in a timely manner.
  • Makes measurements and fits patients for crutches and extremity splints on non-displaced fractures or non-fractured injuries and applies all bandages under the supervision of the RN. Applies extremity splints of displaced fractures under the guidance of the physician and/or APC with assistance of the Specialty Technician.
  • Reports to the primary nurse and/or charge nurse any requests, complaints, or problems of the patient, as well as reports all incidents and/or potentially hazardous situations to the supervisor, nurse director, or designee at the time of occurrence or discovery.
  • Aids in the continuity of patient care through harmonious working relationships with staff members and appropriate interfacing with patients, families, and physicians.
  • Communicates effectively and frequently with healthcare team members to share information and solve problems in a positive and result-oriented manner, through timely and concise oral and/or written reports to oncoming teams as indicated.
  • Aids in sustaining a safe environment of care by maintaining the general cleanliness and appearance of the department and restocking patient care supplies in assigned locations and carts.
  • Maintains and models Nuvance Health values.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS Healthcare Certification for initial employment.
  • Successful completion of Certified Nurse Aide Training Program and/or proof of current certification as C.N.A. or E.M.T. with minimum of 6 months experience.
  • CPI Crisis Prevention Intervention within one year, based on availability of class.
  • General knowledge of high school subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures/terminology, and/or office equipment such as MS Excel, presentation skills, etc.
  • Phlebotomy experience, preferred.
  • Patient care experience in an acute care setting, preferred.

  • Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force.
  • Physical Environment: Significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
