About the Role

The Emergency Department Technician Paramedic assists with patient care ranging from minor injury and illness to initiating advanced life support measures within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and MD. This role is an integral member of the Emergency Department performing specific technical tasks as outlined on the technician’s skills competency check list.

Responsibilities

• Accurately document care provided in patient medical record
• Assist with in-hospital patient transports
• Cross-train to Ambulance Transport if certification level appropriate and interested
• Assist with secretarial duties
• Stock patient supplies and assist with inventory
• Monitor equipment to ensure working order and cleanliness; enter work orders for broken equipment
• Clean patient rooms and equipment between patients
• Perform IV/IO access
• Operate mechanical IV pumps
• Operate defibrillator to include cardioversion and cardiac pacing
• Manage non-displaced gastrostomy tube (Advanced ED Technician Program)
• Perform invasive hemodynamic monitoring
• Place NG/OG tubes
• Administer ACLS and PALS medications
• Administer other medications ordered by MD per the Advanced ED Technician Program policy
• Perform other duties as assigned under the scope of practice of Virginia as a Paramedic

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED
• EMT-P licensure
• EMTs: 1 year of current documented field experience or one year current healthcare experience
• Basic patient assessment skills including primary survey
• Basic knowledge of primary interventions
• Demonstrated effective communication skills
• High level of compassion, desire to help others, and self-confidence
• Basic computer knowledge with demonstrated administrative skills

Competencies

• Patient Care: Provides and documents assistance to patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Assists/provides patient care throughout the entire patient experience under the direct supervision of the physician and/or the registered nurse. Assists in room turnaround, including appropriate cleaning of equipment, supplies, and environment. Organizes supplies and equipment as needed.
• Nursing Expertise: Assists with patient care while complying with Department, Hospital, and Regulatory policies and procedures. Understands concepts of sterile and non-sterile techniques. Adheres to safety measures.

Physical Demands

• Constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping
• Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills
• Attention to detail and ability to write legibly
• Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. (for any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment)

May require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention. On-call responsibilities as directed. Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.

Pay

The base compensation range for this role is $20.50 - $33.95 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
