About the role
Our Emergency Department cares for over 45,000 patients each year in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. With 42 treatment rooms—including 5 Mental Health Secured Unit rooms and 3 Trauma Bays—you’ll gain experience with a wide variety of patient needs. We are a Primary Stroke Center, offer a 24-hour Cardiac Cath Lab with EMS direct-to-Cath capabilities, and are a designated Level III Trauma Center.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with patient assessments, exams, and treatments
- Perform clinical tasks such as:
- Drawing blood & collecting specimens
- Performing EKGs
- Applying splints or immobilizers
- Taking vital signs (adult and pediatric)
- Inserting NG tubes, urethral catheters
- Starting and discontinuing IVs (as applicable)
- Prepare and assist with procedures including suturing, casting, pelvic exams, lumbar punctures, and more
- Recognize abnormal vitals or dysrhythmias and alert the RN/Provider immediately
- Provide patient and family support with professionalism and empathy
- Maintain equipment and supplies; clean and prepare rooms between patients
- Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and hospital standards
Education/Experience Required
- A High School Diploma or GED is required
- BCLS Certification is required
- Previous experience in an Emergency Department or acute care setting is a strong plus
- One of the following is required at time of hire:
- A Basic EMT certification
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant, nursing, or MD program
- One year of Emergency Room Technical experience
- An EMT license is preferred
Certifications/Licensures Required
- Must meet one of the following criteria:
- A Basic EMT (B-EMT) certification
- Graduate of a formal Medical Assistant program
- Completion of a formal nursing education program
- Completion of a formal medical doctor education program
- OR
- One (1) year of applicable Emergency Room Technical experience (Must complete one of the above certifications/programs within 12 months of hire)
Additional Requirements
- EMT license preferred
- Successful completion of a 180-day orientation period is required
