ER Pharmacy Technician (7 on, 7 off, Overnight)

Under the direction of a Clinical Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician prepares and distributes medications, maintains drug inventory, and provides patient care.

Responsibilities

• Fills and delivers medication through ADC systems.
• Answers and triages pharmacy phone calls and messages from hospital staff.
• Communicates with the Clinical Pharmacist to provide precise information when distributing medications in a timely manner to the nursing units.
• Completes monthly medication room, ADC, and outdate inspections.
• Assists in restocking inventory.
• Pre-packs bulk medications and compounds ointments, creams, and oral solutions.
• Sets up and refills crash cart trays.
• Determines when IVs and minibags are due by reviewing MARs.
• Prepares and delivers large volume intravenous mixtures, antibiotic minibags, and total parenteral nutrition solutions.
• Restocks supplies, solutions additives, and solutions.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning in compounding suites in accordance with policy.
• Works in the ER to obtain medication histories on patients being admitted to the hospital.
• Adheres to JCAHO, USP 797, USP 800, and State regulations.
• Assists in training new employees and ensures optimal pharmaceutical care is provided to patients.
• Evaluates areas in need of improvement and provides input to improve current methods, services, programs, or technology.
• Performs all other related duties to support departmental goals.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 to 3 years of experience as a pharmacy technician.
• Registered in the state of Rhode Island as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist Limited.
• National certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred.
• Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials, and controlled substances, and understanding of related practices and procedures.
• Working knowledge of mathematics, pharmacology, and quality control.
• Ability to adjust priorities based on understanding of policies and procedures.
• Ability to maintain record-keeping systems and procedures.
• Good judgment and strong verbal communications, including strong phone skills.
• Highly productive and quality-focused.
• Exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
