Equipment Operator Stormwater Maintenance

Serves as an Equipment Operator for stormwater operations and maintenance activities with a commitment to the One City, One Team approach, positively collaborating with team members and residents, and showing dedication to excellent service with courtesy and kindness.

About the Role

Work hours are 10 hours per day, four days per week, Monday through Thursday. This position is considered essential personnel required to report for duty in response to community emergencies (e.g., natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard). Employees are subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing and must serve as the on-call 24/7 responder on a rotating basis for after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency duty. Flexibility to reach the Public Works Administration Building within 30 minutes during adverse weather is required.

Responsibilities

• Clean, maintain, and perform minor repairs of the City's stormwater infrastructure, including storm sewers, inlets/catch basins, manholes, channels, swales, permanent stormwater quality treatment measures (best management practices/BMPs), and other associated infrastructure.
• Operate heavy and/or specialized equipment such as: backhoe, front-end loader, tractor with various attachments, flusher truck, forklift, tandem axle dump truck, dump truck with snow plow and spreader, sanders, deicer/anti-icing applicators, street sweepers, skid steer, tractor truck and trailer, end dump, tandem axle roll-off truck, vacuum/jet truck, camera inspection van, commercial mowers, welding equipment, etc.
• Operate heavy equipment on a limited basis.
• Drive pickup truck to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to work sites.
• Respond to emergency situations such as flooding, adverse weather events, non-hazardous waste spills, and removal of street hazards.
• Weigh risks and make field decisions under the general direction of the Crew Supervisor.
• Participate in annual flood response and snow removal training.
• Recognize and report abnormally operating equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and construction equipment.
• Perform thorough pre- and post-trip DOT inspections and document findings.
• Perform general labor as needed and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School graduate or GED required.
• Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement.
• Experience operating a tandem axle dump truck, snowplow, backhoe, skid steer, street sweeper, and/or other construction-related equipment is highly desirable.
• Previous experience constructing or maintaining stormwater infrastructure (e.g., storm sewer, inlets, manholes, channels) or roadways is highly desirable.
• Experience with stormwater, water/wastewater, or roadway construction, maintenance, and repair preferred.
• Welding and/or mechanical experience is desirable.
• Flagging and Traffic Control Certificates highly desired.
• Confined Space Entry training and/or certification desired.

Skills

• Knowledge of equipment, materials, and techniques used in stormwater infrastructure inspection, maintenance, construction, and cleaning; pipe jetting; street sweeping; and snow and ice control.
• Skilled in operating light to medium duty equipment needed to construct, repair, and maintain stormwater infrastructure and sweep streets.
• Knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and ability to operate snowplows with anti-icing/deicing equipment.
• Ability to work safely, lead by example, and adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Good record-keeping skills and basic computer skills, including the ability to use project and asset management software.
• Construction knowledge and experience with stormwater infrastructure installation (e.g., storm sewer, inlets, manholes), concrete flatwork installation, hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt, road base, trench excavation, backfill and compaction, construction dewatering, etc. preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Frequent strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may require strenuous application in awkward positions.
• Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
• Occasional exposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $25.42–$34.32 per hour with a hiring range of $25.42–$29.87, depending on qualifications and experience.
