Equipment Operator III - IAH
About the role
The Equipment Operator III in the Horticulture & Grounds Maintenance section of the Houston Airport System supports the goal of "Opening Day Fresh" by managing landside and airside mowing activities, ditch maintenance, and erosion programs. This position requires a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with a Hazmat "X" endorsement.
Responsibilities
- May coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.
- Operates heavy equipment and mowing equipment as assigned.
- Cleans and clears ditches to maintain drainage efficiency.
- Assists with minor FAA 139 pavement breakout repairs.
- Trucks operate to transport equipment to work sites.
- Provides written reports, and records.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area.
- Cleans and services equipment.
- Performs pre and post trip inspections on all equipment assigned.
- May assume shift lead responsibilities as directed.
- Trains less experienced team members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Two years of experience in the operation of plant and automotive equipment.
- Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions.
- Must have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
- Fuel Truck Operator’s License with a Hazmat "X" endorsement.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years with mowing equipment knowledge and other heavy equipment such as dump truck, loader, and backhoe.
- Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who meet the qualifications.
Skills
Skills tests are required as part of the selection process, which may include application review and/or interview, and possibly a skills assessment test.
Benefits
The position involves safety impacts and is subject to random drug testing. Candidates must pass an assignment drug test if they are selected for a promotional position.
Pay
The salary offered is determined by the candidate's qualifications and the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
Schedule
The workdays and hours are Sunday through Thursday, 6:00am to 2:30pm, subject to change.
General Information
The position requires stooping, bending, and lifting of items up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. It involves routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution, and periodic exposure to chemical substances and minor physical trauma.
Working Conditions
The position requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to quickly changing external stimuli.
