Distinguishing Features of Work

This is skilled work in the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized equipment used to maintain assets associated with the Flood Control Project and Stormwater Management System. May supervise other staff in completion of assigned tasks. Work is performed independently, but under the general direction of a supervisor. This position requires working outdoors in inclement weather including rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity, as well as snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations. These may include overnight shifts, weekends, and low-light or low-visibility conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment to perform assigned maintenance and construction tasks, including street sweepers, bulldozers, large graders, scrapers, large backhoes, large ditch digging machines, semi tractor trailers, windrowing machines, and stormwater combo cleaners.
  • Specializes in specific operations and ensures high-quality execution.
  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces storm sewer conduits and structures.
  • Performs mechanical maintenance and service work on equipment.
  • Assists supervisors in daily assignments, task distribution, and paperwork completion.
  • Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of automotive equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in construction and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of methods for concrete, asphalt, and brick repairs, or knowledge of paints, thinners, and related supplies.
  • Skill in the care and operation of heavy and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to lead the work of others in maintenance operations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances such as traffic exhaust, open grounds, and construction.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use a chainsaw and/or jackhammer.
  • Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs.
  • Ability to continuously perform tasks requiring pushing, pulling, climbing (ladders and in/out of vehicles), bending, twisting, reaching, standing, and walking (up to half a mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds independently and up to 200 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to maneuver onto riding machines with a two-foot steep first step and onto frames or fenders for daily fluid/filter checks and maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Possession and ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, or Class B with air brake and tanker endorsement. Canadian or Mexican citizens must have or obtain a CDL from their home country.
