Equipment Operator I
Job Summary
Plans, organizes and supervises the acquisition, cataloging, and processing of library materials. Supervises librarians engaged in providing services for the Information Management Division of the Library.
Representative Duties
- Selects, plans and manages third-party vendors for outsourcing of cataloging and bibliographic management.
- Analyzes, selects and builds workflow around Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) editing software and related MARC utility software such as bibliographic labeling products.
- Hires, schedules, trains, reviews and evaluates work of assigned staff.
- Supervises the work of librarians and staff engaged in providing services for the Information Management Division including the cataloging and item processing of library material.
- Troubleshoots system malfunctions and configuration errors.
- Coincides with vendors in identifying and solving system problems.
- Researches, analyzes and makes recommendations for the acquisition and implementation of all system upgrades.
- Evaluates, analyzes and implements system improvements suggested by library staff and public users.
- Performs the original cataloging of library materials in all formats.
- Coincides with the Principal Librarian for Reference Services to coordinate the library’s collection development activities.
- Prepares, administers, maintains and monitors the budget for the Information Management Division.
- Maintains records and prepares a variety of statistical and analytical reports.
- Responds to inquiries and makes referrals, as appropriate.
- Assists in the development, maintenance and integration of various local library databases.
- Participates in Library planning and decision-making activities.
- May represent the Principal Librarian in his or her absence.
- Attends and participates in a variety of meetings.
- Makes public presentations and represents the Library on committees and at various professional meetings.
- Keeps abreast of developments and trends in automation and related areas and makes recommendations for changes as necessary.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge Of Modern integrated library systems.
- Library information technology.
- Principles, practices and procedures of public librarianship.
- Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR)2 standards.
- Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) coding.
- Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) services and practices.
- Library, reference and database resources.
- Capabilities, structure and functionality of digital reference sources.
- Office automation software, computer applications and online databases.
- Budget development and management.
- Supervisory and training principles and practices.
- Effective supervisory techniques.
- Effective customer service techniques.
Education, Training and Experience
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university.
- Four years of recent, paid progressively responsible work experience as a professional librarian.
- Experience should include providing user support and training as well as cataloging to AACR2 standards.
- At least two of the recent, paid years of work experience must have included supervising or coordinating the work of others.
