About the role
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various construction equipment—including dozers, scrapers, loaders, and other machinery—to support earthmoving, grading, and material handling activities on site. This role ensures the integrity of haul roads, stockpiles, and excavation areas while maintaining high standards of safety, equipment maintenance, and operational productivity. The operator collaborates closely with crew members and supervisors to meet project goals, monitor material quality, and contribute to overall site cleanliness and functionality.
Responsibilities
- Primary Equipment Operation
- Dozer Operations: Perform material pushing and grading to maintain haul roads and manage stockpiles. Execute excavation and grading tasks using blade and ripper bar in coordination with grade setters and scraper operators. Conduct slope grading using D-6 dozers as required. Track-walk equipment to and from designated work areas. Perform end-of-day clean-up around tracks and allow equipment cool-down.
- Scraper Operations: Excavate and transport overburden and other materials across the site. Control scraper depth and paddle rotation during cutting and loading operations. Haul material between cut and dump areas, adhering to cycle time standards. Dump loads while in motion, ensuring proper material placement. Road equipment to and from fuel lines, job sites, and secure locations. Attach and calibrate grade laser systems for elevation control. Operate in tandem (push-pull) or with dozer assistance for loading, as needed.
- Loader Operations: Feed crushers, load haul trucks, and manage material flow efficiently. Other Equipment: Operate additional construction equipment (e.g., roller, backhoe, excavator, compactor, blade, tractor) as required to support project completion.
- Inspection, Maintenance & Safety
- Conduct daily pre-operation inspections for all equipment, checking fluid levels, leaks, wear, and safety features. Document inspection results and report maintenance needs promptly. Perform routine maintenance and equipment warm-up procedures. Clean equipment cabs, windows, and remove excess material to ensure visibility and operational safety. Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazard awareness practices. Participate in daily Stretch & Flex exercises and complete attendance documentation.
- Planning & Monitoring
- Receive and review daily task assignments and job-specific instructions. Orient to crew responsibilities and adapt to job changes as needed. Monitor equipment performance and soil conditions to ensure proper compaction and alignment with project specifications. Plan efficient routes for material movement and spoil distribution. Interpret grade markers, engineering notations, and site plans throughout operations.
- Communication & Team Collaboration
- Maintain clear communication with foremen, leadsmen, superintendents, and grade checkers. Use hand signals and two-way radios to coordinate with ground personnel and other equipment operators. Report mechanical issues and operational concerns promptly. Collaborate with team members to meet production goals and minimize downtime. Support & Site Maintenance: Assist with general plant maintenance and site clean-up activities. Support ground crew with manual tasks (e.g., shoveling, jackhammering, lifting materials) when equipment is not in operation.
