Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Operate road maintenance, construction and repair vehicles and equipment including pick up trucks, 1-ton dump trucks, single axle plow trucks (with plow, wing, sander, and brine unit), tandem axle truck, tri-axle truck, front end loaders, tractors, mowers, brush chippers, compressors, semi-tractor and trailer, portable traffic signals, pavement saws, chain saw, cement mixer, compactor, jackhammer, weed trimmers, drills, cutting torch, brush cutter, rollers (steel and pneumatic), shoulder grader.
- Repair and maintain right-of-way areas by mowing, removing brush, tree limbs, and rubbish, spreading crushed rock, shaping ditches, spreading black dirt, seeding, and mulching.
- Repair and maintain road surfaces using shovels, asphalt rakes, grade stakes, brooms, air compressors, and jackhammers.
- Remove snow and maintain roadways using snow plows, wings, spreaders, and brine units.
- Set up and take down snow fence as directed.
- Ensure the safety of highway workers and motorists and minimizes traffic congestion by managing traffic flow. This includes deploying barricades, cones, arrow boards, and signs, as well as using hand signals and flagging equipment.
- Construct and repair spillways, curbs, guardrails, and culverts.
- Inspect equipment before use for safety and maintenance issues.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Keep equipment clean and in good working order.
- Keep current on safety-related issues: Become familiar with the latest procedures. Attend all required safety-related training. Report all accidents promptly.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- A current, unrestricted (not due to corrective lenses) driver’s license.
- A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement (Class A is preferred).
Other Essential Job Functions
- Physical elements: Lift, push, pull; lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; shovel gravel from the truck or the ground; lift snow fence rolls, push and roll them up to 100’, and install posts using a post pounder; lift signs and hold in place; shovel or rake the asphalt; bend, squat, or kneel to perform maintenance activities; climb, overhead work.
- Equipment use: A variety of vehicles and equipment, such as single, multiple axle, and 4-wheel drive trucks, tractor mowers, front-end loaders, steel drum or rubber tire rollers, mini excavators, shoulder grader, etc.; lift and operate portable power tools such as chainsaws, cut-off saws, air hammers, and various other types of hand tools.
- Working conditions: Primarily outdoor work, exposing employees to all weather conditions; exposure to hazards such as traffic, dust, dirt, and noise; potentially hazardous substances, including diesel fuel, gasoline, lubricants, and solvents; required to work during emergencies like storms or flooding, at accident scenes, and for emergency repairs to roads, bridges, and signs.
