About the Role
Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the disposal of refuse at the County transfer station. Responsibilities include operating bulldozers, rubber tire loaders, excavators, graders, yard tractors, and trash compactors to remove solid waste from the transfer station into tractor trailers for transport to a landfill. The role also involves moving trailers around the yard, cleaning the compactor and surrounding areas, and making minor repairs on all equipment. Reports to the Transfer Station Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Operates one or more types of motorized heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozers, rubber tire loaders, graders, backhoes) to haul, push, and load solid waste and other materials for transfer to a landfill.
- Receives instruction and trains in the use of various equipment as time and workload permit.
- Assists in directing and controlling the disposal of refuse at the transfer site, including guiding patrons and ensuring compliance with established policies, procedures, and standards.
- Assists with minor maintenance and repair of equipment used in transfer station operations.
- Performs grading tasks for repairs or future use, such as grading roads, building berms, and digging trenches.
- Performs other related work as required.
Requirements
- Completion of high school, plus 2 years' experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
