Equipment Operator

Operates various types and sizes of mobile equipment such as tracked and rubber-tired backhoes, wheeled and skid-steer bucket loaders, roller-drum asphalt compactors, sewer jetting machines, and street sweepers. Regularly inspects equipment for proper operation and performs rudimentary mechanical maintenance. Uses equipment to safely and effectively clean, maintain, and/or repair city streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and other public infrastructure. Responds to after-hours or emergency work needs as required. Serves as work team lead where assigned.

Responsibilities

• Operates skid-steer loaders and various special-use attachments such as asphalt planer, point breaker, sweeper brush bucket, and post-hole auger.
• Operates tracked or wheeled bucket loaders to stockpile and/or transport materials such as soil, rock salt, and gravel. Loads trucks within their carrying capacity following safe work practices.
• Operates tracked or rubber-tired backhoes to excavate, place material, and remove debris such as concrete slabs or fallen trees, digs holes, and paves streets. Uses special attachments like hydraulically driven point breakers and soil compaction tampers.
• Transports equipment using fifth-wheel tractor-trailers and straight trucks with bumper-pull trailers, including loading and unloading bulky equipment from tilt-bed and gooseneck lowboy trailers. Maintains knowledge of regulations for transporting heavy equipment locally and across state lines.
• Drives single-axle, tandem-axle, and one-ton dump trucks, including use of salt spreaders, front-mounted snow plows, and side-mounted wing plows.
• Participates in the Maintenance Division’s snow and ice control program. Maintains proficiency in operating snow plow trucks to serve as a model and technical resource. Connects and disconnects snow plowing equipment attachments. Leads work crews in cleaning and performing mechanical maintenance on equipment.
• Performs walk-around inspections prior to operation, replenishes fluid levels, completes logbooks, and checks visible components for wear or cracks. Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor. Performs minor maintenance such as replacing v-belts, hoses, and sweeper brushes.
• Serves as a work crew lead when assigned, ensuring equipment and materials are brought to the job site. Monitors job safety, addresses safety issues, and ensures proper work zone traffic control. Delegates tasks and verifies completion.
• Trains others in the proper operation, inspection, and care of equipment.
• Performs light mechanical shop work, including use of cutting torches, welding equipment, and various pneumatic and manual hand tools.
• Assists in the general maintenance and repair of city infrastructure, including shoveling, asphalt raking, and jackhammering.
• Performs basic data entry using a computerized work management system.
• Reads and interprets equipment operating/maintenance manuals, construction blueprints, work schedules, and utility location information.

Streets

• Operates oil distributor truck to place road oils for asphalt paving and street seal coating, monitoring equipment for proper operation.
• Operates steel-drum or pneumatic-wheel compaction rollers to compact freshly laid asphalt using proper techniques.
• Operates asphalt paving machines to place asphalt on streets and parking lots, coordinating asphalt delivery and unloading.
• Operates toothed-drum milling machines to remove asphalt or concrete surfaces, coordinating the loading of milled material onto trucks.

Stormwater

• Operates combination water jet and vacuum trucks to clean and remove debris from storm drains, monitoring hoses for wear and replacing sections as needed.
• Operates street sweepers to remove debris from streets and parking lots, tracking debris collection and organizing removal. Maintains proper broom adjustment and cleans sweepers daily.
• Assists equipment mechanics in performing major mechanical repairs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tankers endorsements.
• Possession of ATSSA or IMSA Construction Traffic Flagger and Work Zone Safety Certification.
• Must maintain an insurable driving record.
• Five years of general construction experience, including operation of mobile construction equipment and heavy-duty vehicles, or equivalent experience.

Schedule

Normal work hours: 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. Must be available to work days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities, including after-hours or emergency work needs.

Pay

Salary range: Grade C $23.40 - $26.04 per hour.
