About the role

The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating all container handling equipment and performing associated duties in a safe and productive manner. They uphold the values of the GPA to promote Safety, Integrity, Respect, Community, Creativity, and Opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all major types of container field equipment including Jockey Truck, Forklift, Forklift with chassis flipper attachment, Toplift (full and empty), Rubber Tired Gantry Crane, and Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes.
  • Work productively in conjunction with over-the-road drivers and yard operations.
  • Inspect assigned equipment for safe working condition and report deficiencies to an immediate supervisor.
  • Perform manual labor involving lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking, pushing, and pulling.
  • Perform clerical duties related to receiving and delivering containers/chassis.
  • Learn and assist with RF systems, computers, and other technology.
  • Maintain accurate stack inventory and check for damage or exceptions on cargo.
  • Perform various types of preventative maintenance and repairs to equipment, as needed.
  • Install and verify inter-box connectors (IBC) on rail cars after loading and uninstall as needed before unloading.
  • Assist in unplugging and moving main power cables on RTG.
  • Guide or direct peers working within his/her jurisdiction.
  • Conduct equipment training for new and promoted employees.

Requirements

  • Possess working knowledge of heavy equipment.
  • Able to work at heights of up to 75 feet.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, kneel, climb, walk, push, and pull.
  • In good physical condition with excellent vision, night vision, depth perception, color discrimination.
  • Pass hearing and visual acuity tests.
  • Have good eye-hand-foot coordination, ability to follow instructions, and perform routine, repetitive work.
  • Able to communicate in writing and accomplish tasks from written instructions.
  • Able to work shift work, holidays, and weekends when necessary.
  • Able to be trained on new technology as it is introduced into the workplace.
  • Able to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with GPA staff on all levels.
  • Able to make adjustments to work according to changes in various weather conditions.
  • Able to successfully complete training on new technology as automation is introduced into the job.

Experience & Education

  • Previous experience in heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid CDL.
  • Some clerical experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Licenses & Certifications

  • TWIC - Transportation Worker Identification Credential required upon hire.
  • Driver's License - Valid state driver's license required upon hire.
