About the role

The City of Vacaville is seeking an Equipment Mechanic to join the Public Works Fleet Maintenance Division. This position supports the diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment needed to ensure essential public services are supported.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance to maximize the safety, reliability and performance of the City's fleet.
  • Respond to emergency vehicle and equipment breakdowns by performing timely field repairs.
  • Fabricate, modify and repair parts using drilling, cutting and welding equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including charging, ignition and high-output electrical components.
  • Inspect, diagnose, rebuild and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, hoses, cylinders and valves.
  • Prepare and maintain public safety vehicles and equipment to support police, fire and other essential City operations.
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment and specialized tools to identify mechanical issues and optimize vehicle performance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience as a mechanic or similar field.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Qualifications

  • Experience with various makes and models of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of automotive and industrial mechanics principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Good physical condition to perform manual labor.

Pay

$85,174 - $103,529 Annually. A 2% COLA is scheduled for 11/1/2026. This position is eligible for certification pay.

Varies based on departmental needs, but typically includes a mix of day, evening, and weekend shifts.
