Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range for this position varies based on national market rates and is determined by a combination of factors including role scope, complexity, location, and qualifications. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits package.

What Is the Opportunity?

Bond & Specialty Insurance (BSI) provides management and professional liability, cyber, crime insurance, and surety bonds to businesses of all sizes. The BSI Claim Counsel team investigates, analyzes, and resolves claims and claim litigation to ensure superior customer service and optimal claim results. The Private/Non-Profit Team covers executive and organizational management liability for privately held companies and non-profits. The PNP Programs Team handles Community Associations, Healthcare Institutions, and Public Entities. The Professional Liability Team offers errors and omissions liability products to various professional segments.

What Will You Do?

  • Follow operational policies to analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims of varying severity with moderate supervision.
  • Prepare and present reports for management reflecting loss development, financial exposure, reserve adjustments, coverage issues, and claim strategies.
  • Retain, monitor, and manage outside counsel using litigation management plans and budgets.
  • Communicate significant claim exposures to underwriting teams.
  • Identify and coordinate recovery efforts with the Recovery Management Unit and Claim management.
  • Travel to and attend mediations, settlement conferences, claim conferences, field office visits, trials, and depositions.
  • Refine policy interpretation and coverage analysis skills, including drafting coverage opinions with case law.
  • Negotiate settlements and resolutions, review releases and settlement agreements, and ensure confidentiality and non-disclosure provisions.
  • Support underwriting marketing efforts, including participating in broker and account visits, conducting risk mitigation seminars, and authoring customer-focused white papers and articles.
  • Maintain awareness of marketplace conditions, conduct research, and draft reference materials to inform claim and underwriting colleagues.
  • Obtain and maintain required adjuster's licenses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Five or more years of relevant legal or claim handling work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work through conflict and resolve issues professionally.
  • Strong decision-making and negotiation skills within designated authority limits.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate coverage determinations clearly.
  • Exceptional time management and attention to detail.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Juris Doctorate Degree.
  • Properly licensed, registered, or authorized to practice law in the jurisdiction where you will be working.
  • Two years of relevant legal experience.
