About the role

The Division of Epidemiology at the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in the area of infectious disease modeling or computational epidemiology. We seek candidates whose expertise and research align with or complement the work of the University of Utah Infectious Disease Dynamics Group and the Division's strengths in areas such as mathematical, computational, and statistical modeling, data science and machine learning, network science, public health policy, outbreak analytics, pandemic preparedness, health equity, antimicrobial resistance, healthcare-associated infections, genomics, or the microbiome. The Division collaborates with basic and translational researchers across the Department of Internal Medicine and other health science departments, the Department of Mathematics, Mathematical Biology research group, the School of Biological Sciences, and with public health partners in the intermountain west and across the globe. Additionally, the Division partners with researchers in the University-wide Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Disease (3i) Initiative, with strong investigative groups in host-pathogen interactions, inflammatory bowel disease, neurologic diseases, global health, and cancer; and the Microbiota and Gastrointestinal Immunology Consortium (MAGIC), with strong investigative groups in microbiota research. The University is also a premier academic environment for bioinformatics and data science. In addition, the University is closely affiliated with investigators at ARUP Laboratories, a premier reference laboratory with extensive microbiologic resources, expertise in diagnostics, and access to clinical samples and isolates, as well as the Utah Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of research projects in infectious disease modeling or computational epidemiology.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance knowledge in the field of infectious diseases.
  • Develop and analyze models to predict the spread of infectious diseases and inform public health policies.
  • Engage in data science and machine learning techniques to enhance understanding of infectious disease dynamics.
  • Participate in the design and execution of studies involving genomic and microbiome data.
  • Advocate for health equity and contribute to efforts to reduce disparities in infectious disease outcomes.
  • Support the training and mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Present findings at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent degree in relevant field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics).
  • A strong research track record that supports an independent research program.
  • Experience in infectious disease modeling or computational epidemiology.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Commitment to advancing health equity and reducing disparities in infectious disease outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications: PhD or equivalent degree, as well as a research track record that supports an independent research program.

Skills

  • Expertise in infectious disease modeling or computational epidemiology.
  • Strong background in data science and machine learning.
  • Experience with network science and public health policy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong publication record in relevant fields.
