About the role

Knowesis is seeking an Epidemiologist to support the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, Public Health Research Directorate (USAFSAM/PHR), 711th Human Performance Wing. This position focuses on reproductive health outcomes research for the missile community.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor the health status of the USAF population by analyzing surveillance databases (ESSENCE, DRSi) and provide feedback, support, quality control, and administrative maintenance for these systems.
  • Design written communication for internal and external purposes.
  • Advise military team leaders on outbreak investigations and coordinate novel public health research.
  • Grant access to surveillance systems, ensure data accuracy, and edit information as needed.
  • Oversee health surveillance data collection in support of USAFSAM/PHR’s mission.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for data-related support services (e.g., analysis, interpretation, report generation).
  • Provide input on data systems design, upgrading, and integration.
  • Maintain professional relationships with data creators and IT support staff to ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Represent USAFSAM/PHR in collaborative efforts to increase data sharing and surveillance partnerships.
  • Map data between elements, create data dictionaries, and establish relationships between datasets.
  • Assist with epidemiological study design, execution, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposals.
  • Support data users in producing reports, special study methods, and surveillance protocols.
  • Prioritize research areas and work with base-level, Major Command (MAJCOM), and Air Force personnel to identify health issues requiring study.
  • Create and submit research protocols to IRBs and coordinate with personnel at research sites.
  • Generate summary reports for base-level personnel, USAFSAM/PHR, MAJCOMs, AFMEDCOM, and the Defense Health Agency (DHA).
  • Design and maintain data management protocols and policies for surveillance reporting and special projects.
  • Recommend improvements for data collection/management and design requirements for new systems.
  • Provide conference support, including preparing posters, presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Brief research findings at meetings or forums as determined by the Government.
  • Provide technical automation support for Microsoft Windows, Office (Access, Excel, Publisher), and Adobe.
  • Build training materials in public health and epidemiology and deliver courses/workshops at USAFSAM.
  • Train USAFSAM/PHR personnel on data products and educate students as appropriate.
  • Provide advisory support on outbreak investigations, library research, and special data requests.

No travel is anticipated for this position.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a related field.
  • Current or ability to complete HIPAA training within one month of employment.
  • Current or ability to complete Scientific and Technical Information (STINFO) and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training within one month of employment.
  • Expertise in health surveillance systems (e.g., DRSi, MHS Genesis, ESSENCE, DOEHRS-HC, ILER, ASIMS, Envision).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SAS, SAS Enterprise Guide, and working knowledge of R and/or STATA.
  • Advanced analytical skills in public health/epidemiology, including descriptive statistics, measures of association, statistical significance, and data modeling.
  • Experience creating and submitting research protocols to IRBs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with USAFSAM/PHR data repositories.
  • Prior experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Air Force public health programs.
  • Experience preparing and presenting peer-reviewed research at professional conferences.

Pay

Anticipated salary midpoint: $130,000, negotiable based on experience.
