About the role

As an Epidemiologist 1 within the Epidemiology Department at District Two, Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents. District 2 Public Health serves 13 counties in northeast Georgia, including Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties. One of the fastest growing regions in the state, District 2 includes rural and urban communities with diverse public health challenges.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, plans, develops, and conducts epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, and interventions limited in scope and/or complexity to determine the causes of diseases and implement methods of disease control.
• Collects, analyzes, and interprets statistical data and prepares epidemiologic reports.
• Maintains awareness of current disease trends.
• Identifies groups at risk, symptoms, exposure location, and transmission timeline.
• Applies evidence-based interventions and control measures.
• Monitors outbreaks and assists in public health emergencies.
• Routinely conducts follow-up with healthcare providers to obtain clinical information and other pertinent health information.
• Provides disease prevention and control recommendations to healthcare providers and health partners.
• Performs additional tasks and duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master's degree in public health or closely related field from an accredited college or university
• OR Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university AND two years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a master’s degree in public health or a closely related field.
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
• Bilingual (e.g., Spanish).
• Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare providers and suspect case-patients.
• Ability to work independently and be self-motivated to complete tasks.
• Experience with case management.
• Ability to prioritize case load.
• Experience with interviewing and communicating with people from various backgrounds.
• Experience conducting medical record reviews.
• Experience with data management (from data collection through dissemination).
• Experience with data dissemination (e.g., surveillance reports, data summaries).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Understanding of basic statistics.
