EOI Student Staff - 1st Gen Program (Undergrad/Work Study)
The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a student employee for the 1st Gen Student Success program as part of the Educational Opportunity Initiatives (EOI) community. The successful candidate will play a significant role in supporting first-generation college students.
About the role
This is a grant-funded position that is term limited and will start as a one-semester term with the option for renewal. The student will sit on the newly formed 1st Gen Campus Council, provide recommendations to improve 1st Gen programming, coordinate events to celebrate 1st Gen students, and support EOI Scholars.
Responsibilities
- Support all logistical aspects of event planning such as effective tracking of attendees, venue confirmation, assist with flyer and brochure creation, presenter confirmation, sign in sheet creation, securing vendors, set up and close out.
- Remain up to date with all communications across the office ranging from front desk coverage, program calendars (e-version and physical boards), and daily front desk procedures. Ensure equipment and resources are stocked daily and relay key updates to the administrative assistants and/or staff throughout their shift.
- Capture programming history (pictures, documents, presentation outlines) to help market key program events online and in print form. Assist with the development of an overarching marketing and communications strategy for event promotion and closeouts.
- Represent the program at internal and external community spaces to provide awareness of the mission, programs, and goals of the program(s). Serve as a liaison with community partners/campus departments.
- Routinely collect data to provide to the database management staff member. Peer Mentoring: Engage peers through an individualized, holistic, mentoring model. Compile campus and community resources to effectively respond to student needs.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled at UM-Flint during the semester(s) employed
- Adequate computer and writing skills
- Exercise a strengths-based approach in being sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged students
- Think critically and problem solve swiftly and responsibly
- Maintain a professional appearance and character
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of multimedia recording and video editing to support the EOI Stories project
- Experience working with students linked to college motivation, confidence building, and postsecondary success
- Participate in programming offered by the Office of Educational Opportunity Initiatives (EOI)
- Eligible for Work-study

Modes of Work
- Onsite: The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.
