Environmental Underwriter Trainee

About the role

The Environmental Division of the Great American Insurance Group seeks an Underwriter Trainee to join our Exton, PA office. This position offers opportunities for learning and growth within a supportive environment that values diversity.

Responsibilities

• Participate in risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability activities per divisional objectives.
• Review, summarize, and interpret environmental reports, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase I Site Investigations, and other technical documents.
• Work with the underwriting team to learn how to price business, analyze coverage, and develop business relationships with internal and external customers.
• Learn to assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiate appropriate loss prevention actions.
• Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
• Participate in visiting agents, brokers, and producers with a more senior underwriter to retain existing accounts, build, and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities.
• Learn to interpret, explain, and market products and services.
• Apply underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, ideally with an environmental focus.
• Generally, 0-2 years of insurance or environmental consulting experience is preferred.
• Strong MS Office skills and proficiency with technology.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

• Recent science or engineering graduate or early-career environmental professional.
