Purpose Of Job
The Environmental Specialist will ensure our operations meet all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This role will be responsible for conducting on-site audits, managing hazardous waste disposal, and interpreting complex environmental laws to mitigate risk and promote sustainable practices.
Job Components
- Monitor and interpret regulations from the EPA and state agencies (e.g., RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act) to ensure organizational adherence.
- Developing and/or revising various U.S. EPA and/or state-required regulatory written programs.
- Authoring environmental compliance reports by local, state, and federal requirements (e.g., RCRA, Tier II, CA Hazardous Materials Business Plans, EPCRA 312 and 313 reporting).
- Conduct routine facility inspections and audits to identify potential compliance gaps and recommend corrective actions.
- Collect and analyze samples (soil, water, air), interpret laboratory results, and maintain accurate records for agency reporting.
- Lead investigations into environmental incidents, such as spills or unauthorized releases, and coordinate remediation efforts.
- Develop and deliver environmental training programs for staff to ensure awareness of hazardous waste handling and safety protocols.
- Abside by OSHA and DOT Hazmat regulations.
- Conduct Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Civil/Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- 2–5+ years of experience in environmental regulatory compliance, preferably in an industrial or consulting setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel for data analysis).
- Valid state driver’s license required for frequent travel to work sites.
- Familiar with OSHA and DOT Hazmat regulations.
- Experience with Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (preferred).
Preferred Skills
- Proven background in environmental management (multi-site experience preferred).
- Experience with the California Environmental Reporting System (plus).
- Experience with Battery Stewardship Programs (plus).
- Strong communication skills for negotiating with regulatory agencies and presenting findings to stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines under moderate supervision.
- Strong problem-solving skills coupled with being detail-oriented.
- Proven ability to take a proactive approach to pollution prevention.
- Experience implementing ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (plus).
- Professional certifications such as Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager (REM) or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP).
