EPRI’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Environmental Solutions Program investigates innovative technologies and approaches to design, site, construct, and manage T&D systems with a focus on environmental impact. Research priorities in this program are focused on enhancing the safe and reliable delivery of electricity while protecting environmental and cultural resources, decreasing costs, and supporting corporate reliability, resilience, sustainability, and conservation goals.

About the role

We are looking for an environmental scientist to join our team, contributing to industry-wide issues and new technology development. This role offers the opportunity to grow your knowledge and apply it to make a difference for the industry, the environment, and society.

Responsibilities

  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists.
  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.
  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International.
  • Effectively communicates strategies and results, both verbally and in writing, to subject matter experts, program members, and advisors through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences.
  • Coordinates work activities across programs.
  • May provide oversight of a project team to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Organizes external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget.
  • Supports the planning and execution of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports.
  • Manages small or medium (less complex) projects including budgets and resources without direct people management responsibilities.
  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.
  • Coordinates EPRI work with national and international technical networks (e.g., manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations).
  • Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.
  • Develops research or services opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities, including solving customer problems and delivering actionable insights.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to junior staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.
  • Graduate degree preferred (master or PhD).
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering or research experience.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management, animal behavior, avian protection plans, and compliance with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, and Endangered Species Act.
  • Experience with remote sensing technologies including Unmanned Aerial System (UAS/drone).
  • Proficiency in data analysis, machine learning, and programming (R, Python, or similar).
  • Experience with GIS tools (utility GIS, ESRI software, or similar).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Electric utility experience is a plus.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $130,000 USD to $145,000 USD annually. This range is an estimate and may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market alignment. The salary may also be adjusted based on geographic location.
