Part-time position located in Brattleboro, Vermont.

About the role

Responsible for cleanliness and infection control in designated areas assigned by Manager/Lead, including in-patient, out-patient, and common areas throughout the facility. Duties include dusting, disinfecting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, emptying waste baskets, collecting linen, and performing laundry tasks with both dirty and clean linen.

Responsibilities

  • Keep areas free of dust and debris.
  • General cleaning and disinfecting per policies and procedures of all assigned areas (patients and non-patient areas) per shift.
  • Complete paperwork for tasks and explain any incomplete tasks.
  • Clean bathrooms, sinks, dust, disinfect surfaces, polish furnishings, sweep, mop, and vacuum.
  • Monitor and replenish paper supplies, soaps, disinfectants, trash bags, and other cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Respond to unscheduled housekeeping emergencies (e.g., spills).
  • Operate equipment such as floor scrubbers, carpet shampooers, floor power washers, and buffers (special training required).
  • Collect, deliver, sort, wash, dry, and fold linen.
  • Evaluate and monitor the hospital interior and other facility areas; report items needing repair or attention (e.g., safety concerns) to the appropriate department.

Department Scope of Service

The Environmental Services Department ensures a clean, sanitary, and aesthetically pleasing environment for all patient care areas (Med-Surg, ER, OR, outpatient and diagnostic services, doctor’s offices, etc.) while following safety, cleaning, and infection control practices. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing suitable linen in sufficient quantities and anticipating future needs.
  • Care, repair, and placement of audio/visual equipment.
  • Set-up of meetings and recycling (cardboard, paper, office equipment, and furniture).
  • Assisting all areas through revised schedules, creating custom items (e.g., curtains, cart covers), and providing lost and found services.

Services are provided seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Past cleaning experience preferred.
  • Infection control knowledge preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently, pay attention to details, multitask, and follow set procedures.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Mental Efforts: Manage multiple priorities, solve personnel problems, and interact with other departments.
  • Physical Stamina: Extensive walking, standing, and reaching; ability to work from a six-foot and 12-foot ladder.
  • Routine Tasks: Working on feet 90% of the day, pushing carts, and effective communication with varied personalities.
  • Equipment Use: Proper use of mechanical cleaning equipment (e.g., floor machines, room fogging devices).
  • Exposure: Occasional exposure to blood and/or body fluids; use of hospital cleaning compounds and quaternary disinfectants (must not be allergic).
  • PPE: Required when exposed to body fluids or chemicals.

OSHA Category

OSHA Category I - Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, requiring Universal Precautions and bloodborne pathogens standards.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work near moving mechanical parts: Up to 1/3 of the time.
  • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles: Up to 1/3 of the time.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals: Up to 1/3 of the time.
  • Typical noise level: Moderate noise.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear calls and instructions from staff.

Pay

$18 - $26.22 per hour.

Schedule

  • Hours: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
  • Weekend Schedule: Yes, only weekends.
  • Holiday Schedule: Rotating.
