About the Role

This position involves daily cleaning and supplying of patient rooms, wards, nursing stations, lounges, lavatories, bathrooms, offices, and other assigned areas in accordance with departmental procedures and hospital objectives. The Environmental Services (EVS) Technician uses various cleaning devices such as wet mops, wringers, dusters, vacuum cleaners, and other necessary tools, chemicals, and supplies. Additional duties include receiving deliveries, unpacking, storing, and distributing items, as well as inventorying and stocking supply carts. The EVS Technician also prepares materials, documentation, and equipment for shipping and performs other assigned duties.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties outlined in housekeeping work schedules following the 7 Steps of Cleaning.
  • Clean patient care areas, employee offices, workspaces, hard floors, carpets, and remove trash.
  • Perform equipment cleaning, window and wall washing, and adhere to isolation techniques related to Environmental Services and patient care.
  • Safely use cleaning products and equipment, and assist team members with duties such as discharges when needed.
  • Complete daily project timesheets and Environmental Services dismissal notices.
  • Complete all assigned tasks within the designated work period and communicate effectively with supervisors.
  • Prepare infection waste for disposal and perform terminal cleaning as per procedure, including OR terminal cleaning.
  • Change water in buckets and clean MRI suites and OPR rooms between cases during shifts per procedure.
  • Receive, unpack, count, weigh, and measure incoming supplies; note discrepancies or damaged goods and complete receiving reports.
  • Pack inventoried items and deliver supplies to appropriate departments; inventory and stock nursing supply carts.
  • Prepare, pack, and ready outgoing packages for shipment via UPS, Federal Express, or common carrier.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the receiving dock and storeroom area, including pallets.
  • Carry out special projects assigned by the Materials Manager or designee, such as annual inventory and redesign of distribution processes.
  • Maintain a professional appearance as designated by the department head and cooperate with all personnel.
  • Rotate within the department and by shift as required, maintain ethical relationships, and adhere to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Participate in in-service programs and perform all other related duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State driver’s license.
  • Experience with environmental services or general housekeeping duties and processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years of experience with disinfection processes and use of microfiber materials.
  • Experience using Roto floor scrubbers and power washers.
  • Experience with wet vac use.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Mechanical assistance may be used but should not interfere with normal safety aids such as safety goggles or hearing protection.

  • Ability to read and write instructions and communicate orally.
  • Good vision and hearing.
  • Fully mobile on steps, ladders, etc.
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms (or mechanical substitutes) to safely operate equipment such as mop wringers, housekeeping carts, vacuums, and large linen carts.
  • Able to bend, stoop, and lift objects up to 45 lbs.

Pay

$24.605 - $26.461 per hour

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services.
  • Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen.
  • Meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer. The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
