About the Role

This position performs various cleaning tasks to provide all staff, visitors, and patients a safe and clean environment. The incumbent maintains high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and freedom from hazards and infections. This role has a degree of autonomy in maintaining an assigned area, making independent judgments on needed activities, and may function as a team leader for specific assignments. Challenges include working discreetly around patients and staff, addressing specialized cleaning needs in patient care units, and safely handling chemical spills (medical, infectious, or routine).

University of Utah Health is a Level 1 Trauma Center nationally ranked for academic research, quality standards, and patient experience, with five hospitals and eleven clinics.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, cleans, mops, scrubs, and dusts floors.
  • Cleans toilets, basins, showers, bathtubs, patient beds, and scrubs walls.
  • Dusts, cleans, and vacuums furniture, fixtures, doors, and related furnishings using appropriate supplies.
  • Operates and maintains electric floor machines, snow blowers, industrial vacuums, carpet shampooing equipment, and upholstery shampooing equipment.
  • Cleans, refinishes, and maintains various floor coverings.
  • Cleans patient rooms, beds, waiting areas, and examination tables.
  • Labels and removes infectious waste bags and containers.
  • Transports custodial supplies and equipment to and from storage and work areas.
  • Replaces sharps containers, transports trash and refuse, removes empty boxes, and organizes closets.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to use basic electronic devices in daily work.
  • Entry-level position; no prior experience required.
  • Dependent upon assigned department, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months of related experience.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting and may require:

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force for lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving objects (e.g., patient care or medical equipment).
  • Standing for sustained periods or walking long distances between work sites.
  • Using a 6-foot step ladder.
  • Exposure to chemical hazards.

Physical requirements include:

  • Carrying, climbing, color determination, crawling, far/near vision, lifting, listening, manual dexterity, pulling/pushing, reaching, sitting, speaking, standing, stooping/crouching, tasting/smelling, and walking.
