About the Role

The Environmental Services Technician ensures a clean and aseptic area within the hospital for the safety, health, and morale of patients, visitors, and employees by performing various housekeeping and other duties. Every team member is responsible for delivering the most remarkable patient experience, fostering a safe environment driven by the principles of "First Do No Harm," and supporting teamwork, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Cleanliness of Public Areas:
    • Polices public areas twice per shift or as assigned to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
    • Dusts and damp mops all public areas on the assigned unit to remove visible soils.
    • Damp wipes all furnishings to remove dust, visible soils, and stains.
    • Cleans carpets and walls as assigned, using proper tools and chemicals to remove dust, dirt, smudges, and streaks.
    • Places wet floor caution signs consistently in the work area.
    • Thoroughly washes walls from bottom to top to remove all soil.
    • Removes excess water from walls and floors after cleaning.
    • Cleans and returns all equipment to the proper storage area.
  • Restroom Maintenance:
    • Maintains all restrooms in a sanitary condition at all times in a timely and productive manner.
    • Cleans restrooms according to department policy and procedure to remove all visible soils and stains.
    • Cleans and polishes all mirrors and stainless steel work.
    • Replenishes dispensable items such as paper towels and tissues.
    • Damp wipes light fixtures, paper towel dispensers, and other wall-mounted fixtures.
    • Empties trash, washes trash containers, and replaces liners.
    • High dusts everything above shoulder height and dust mops all tile floors thoroughly.
    • Uses approved disinfectants to clean fixtures, including pipes and faucets.
    • Removes mineral deposits from toilets and sinks using mild acid bowl cleaner.
    • Ensures toilets are clean on both sides of the seat, beneath the rim, and around hinges.
    • Uses liquid cleanser and detergent disinfectant for heavily soiled sinks and showers, rinsing thoroughly.
  • Patient Room and Ancillary Area Cleaning:
    • Removes all soiled linen from beds and closets, placing it in laundry bags and soiled holding areas.
    • Picks up soiled linen and trash from holding areas, depositing linen in the soiled utility room and trash in dumpsters.
    • Utilizes Universal Precautions when dealing with soiled linen.
    • Picks up trash and soiled linen three times each shift.
    • Disinfects and cleans beds, including wheels, control units, rails, headboards, footboards, and mattresses.
    • Makes beds properly with fitted sheets and spreads, ensuring neatness and proper pillow placement.
    • Removes all trash from rooms, segregating infectious waste and routine trash.
    • Damp wipes trash containers inside and out.
    • Disinfects bedside tables, telephones, over-bed tables, closets, drawers, chairs, and sleeper units.
    • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms to ensure cleanliness, neatness, and deodorization.
    • Disinfects and cleans floors by damp mopping or vacuuming.
    • Completes discharge sheets or paging systems to inform nursing staff when rooms are ready for new patients.
  • Surgical Suite Cleaning (where applicable):
    • Thoroughly cleans and disinfects surgical suites at the end of the day when no ER or Tech is scheduled.
    • Cleans each suite in a timely and productive manner while wearing proper attire (gloves, gown, mask, etc.).
    • Removes all trash and linen from the area, segregating infectious waste and routine trash.
    • Disinfects all items in the room to remove visible soils and infectious material.
  • Customer & Guest Relations:
    • Promotes quality guest relations by identifying internal and external customers, acknowledging them promptly, and using respectful language.
    • Creates a positive impression through effective telephone skills, such as prompt answering, clear identification, attentive listening, and personalized conversation.
    • Fosters a supportive climate by allowing customers to express concerns and addressing them empathetically.
    • Promotes therapeutic interactions by identifying dissatisfaction behaviors and discussing options openly.

Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: Previous hospital or commercial housekeeping experience preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write, and effectively communicate with patients and staff in English.
