Environmental Scientist – Mid-Level – Ecology/Biology Focus (Hybrid)

About the role

Barr is seeking an environmental scientist to join our New Mexico team in a hybrid role. You will support our environmental group in the characterization of environmental resources, conducting wetland delineations, interpreting permitting requirements, reporting, and supporting other project permitting and compliance.

Willingness to occasionally modify your schedule to meet deadlines or client needs is required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments.
• Provide field support, including baseline biological surveys and other ecological field investigations.
• Complete and review written reports based on field findings.
• Communicate with regulatory agencies and clients; develop and review environmental permit applications.
• Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing projects, ensuring milestones are met and providing regular updates to project managers and clients.

Work Environment

This hybrid position is based out of Barr's Albuquerque or Farmington, New Mexico, offices. A hybrid work arrangement splits time between a Barr office and a home office.

Fieldwork may involve difficult terrain typical of backcountry (e.g., dense vegetation, fallen timber, poor footing soils, streams), roadways, and construction sites. Work may also require entering facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of construction or industrial sites. Safety training will be provided.

Physical requirements include walking up to 10 miles per day in extreme temperatures of up to 90+ degrees Fahrenheit.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, studies, or policy; ecology; natural resources management; biology; botany; or a related natural resources field.
• 7 years of relevant experience related to the job responsibilities described above.
• Working knowledge of the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, as well as state and municipal regulatory expertise in New Mexico.
• Ability and willingness to travel to site and client locations about 25% of the time.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with arid west geographies, bird identification, and plant identification.
• Experience with renewable energy siting and permitting.
• Experience with public engagement.

Pay

Anticipated range of $80,000–$100,000 annual salary. Compensation varies based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Classified as Exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
