About the role
AECOM is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Environmental Scientist/Geologist for our Oakland and Sacramento, CA offices.
Responsibilities
- Manage and perform field-based tasks for environmental investigation and remediation programs.
- Oversee and lead field activities including monitoring well installation, soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling using standard environmental drilling and sampling techniques.
- Conduct environmental site assessments, remedial support, and solid waste-related projects.
- Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, and compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations (including RCRA and CERCLA) to ensure compliance.
- Perform data management, evaluation, and technical report writing, including environmental investigation reports, work plans, conceptual site models, monitoring reports, well installation documentation, and closure reports.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive technical reports to support project objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Cook up and interface with local and state regulatory agencies, clients, and subcontractors.
- Apply strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills to evaluate environmental data and develop recommendations.
- Detect and troubleshoot issues encountered during fieldwork, including sampling conditions, drilling challenges, and equipment performance.
- Apply appropriate scientific methods and propose analytical techniques to support project objectives.
- Conduct specific phases of projects under general supervision while supporting senior staff.
- Aid in providing technical recommendations and consulting services within area of expertise.
- Utilize standard business and technical software tools, including Microsoft Office and, as applicable, GIS and AutoCAD.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills in both field and office settings.
- Maintain high attention to detail, organization, and time management while managing multiple project priorities.
- Work independently as a self-starter while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrate willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying and sometimes challenging field conditions.
- Demonstrate flexibility to work on diverse projects, extended hours, and varying locations.
- Travel to project locations, including regional day travel and overnight stays (expected travel may exceed 50%).
- Mentor junior staff and maintain commitment to workplace health and safety.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, engineering, or related field (e.g., hydrogeology, geophysics, geochemistry).
- 2+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of education and experience.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License.
- U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency required.
- Sponsorship is not available for this role.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
- 4+ years of relevant experience (preferred).
- Professional Geologist (PG) license or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) certification (preferred).
- Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (preferred).
- Familiarity with environmental drilling techniques and field sampling methods (now reinforced in responsibilities).
- Knowledge of RCRA and CERCLA processes (now reinforced in responsibilities).
- Experience working with local and state regulatory agencies (now reinforced in responsibilities).
- Experience preparing technical reports including site investigations, monitoring reports, and work plans (now reinforced in responsibilities).
- Task or project management experience (preferred).
- Proposal writing experience is a plus.

Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $69000 to $95000 per year.
