Summary

Lead environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives that protect our people, operations, and the environment.

Principal Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe work environment for all associates by eliminating unsafe acts and conditions while adhering to all company safety policies.
  • Observe all safety requirements and actively prevent and report unsafe acts and conditions for all safety programs, including personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, confined space entry, process safety management, and machine guarding.
  • Ensure compliance with wastewater operations, air quality compliance, biosolids programs, hazardous waste, recycling, solid waste, potable water, and oil-handling programs for designated plant operations.
  • Supervise and manage associates, including hiring, training, and development, to ensure production requirements, environmental regulatory requirements, and sustainability goals are met cost effectively.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and consistent reports to internal and external customers.
  • Lead public education and community relations efforts related to environmental programs.
  • Order all parts, supplies, chemicals, and other materials required by the department.
  • Monitor all activities related to environmental programs, including wastewater operations.
  • Control costs and assets to manage within established goals.
  • Maintain a dotted-line reporting relationship with the Director of Operations at the assigned location and supporting facility managers.
  • Provide timely notification of activities, spill releases, and noncompliance events.
  • Conduct environmental audits of other facilities as part of the internal audit program.
  • Attend and conduct regular meetings to communicate department activities, plant activities, and safety information to associates and management.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by Environmental Operations leadership.

Minimum Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of related work experience.
  • Alternatively, a combination of relevant education and experience demonstrating progressive responsibility in environmental management may be considered.
  • Demonstrate strong reading, mathematics, writing, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
  • Possess a wastewater license at the level required to operate the largest wastewater treatment facility within the areas of responsibility.
  • Multiple license requirements may apply.
  • Meet company safety handbook requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

Preferred Education And Experience

  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or another natural science discipline.

Physical Requirements And Environmental Factors

  • Position is primarily sedentary but may require occasional movement to other offices or buildings.
  • Move light equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Access files, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Work in an office, open-partitioned, cubicle environment.
  • Perform activities involving bending, twisting, lifting, reaching, sitting, and grasping with varying repetitions, distances, angles, weights, heights, time intervals, objects handled, and body positions depending on assigned tasks.
  • Experience exposure to wet and moist floors, including metal and plastic grating surfaces when in a plant environment.
  • Experience exposure to temperatures ranging from 28°F to 100°F, including conditions with ambient and 100% humidity.
  • Handle products in environments ranging from 25°F to 50°F.
  • Experience exposure to noise levels ranging from 50 dB to 110 dB.
  • Experience exposure to chemicals commonly found in poultry, food processing, and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Wear and use all protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the company.
