About the Role

Under the direction of the plant manager, the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Technician provides hands-on support for multiple aspects of the plant's environmental health and safety activities. This role ensures the plant's adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and does not have direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties in accordance with Mizkan America safety policies, OSHA regulations, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), and SOP (Standard Operating Procedures).
  • Follow up on written Safety Tags, completing those that do not require maintenance assistance.
  • Assist in Risk Assessment Training and complete Risk Assessments for new equipment, process changes, or new ingredients.
  • Participate in plant meetings and committees as a Safety Department Representative.
  • Understand and work toward Department KPIs and KAIs to meet departmental goals.
  • Conduct Safety Observations as determined by plant goals.
  • Assist in providing Hearing Tests and Radiation protection.
  • Join assigned Web Conferences.
  • Maintain the Key and Lock program of the plant and make key assignments.
  • Write OPL, SOP, and Safety Training Materials as required.
  • Attend Cap-Ex meetings, represent safety concerns, and complete New Product assessments and/or Risk Assessments.
  • Review Confined Space Entry Permits for correct procedures and follow up on deficiencies.
  • Participate with Mizkan safety group and lead plant safety projects as needed.
  • Assist in plant training for CPR/First Aid, Haz-Mat, PIT, Fall Protection, and Safety Observation.
  • Complete EHS priority projects and manage site security access and program.
  • Coordinate and conduct EHS inspections/audits, perform risk assessments, and train others.
  • Act upon Daily Forklift Checklists and maintain appropriate levels of PPE.
  • Conduct Weekly Emergency Shower and Eye Wash inspections, maintaining logs and ordering parts as needed.
  • Perform monthly equipment checks of Working at Heights equipment and act on deficiencies.
  • Conduct periodic checks of Air Monitoring Equipment, maintaining logs and acting on deficiencies.
  • Perform monthly Fire Extinguisher checks, maintaining logs and acting on deficiencies.
  • Provide monthly Safety Training to plant staff based on the annual Training schedule.
  • Complete monthly storm water inspections, discuss results with Plant Manager, and file results.
  • Participate in Deep Compliance Audits for safety concerns.
  • Review MSDS/SDS sheets for safety concerns and PPE requirements, maintain MSDS/SDS books, and archive retired sheets.
  • Annually participate in a chemical inventory activity and all plant audits.
  • Collect, review, act upon, and file Daily Cranes and Hoists inspections, including follow-up if incomplete.
  • Collect, review, sign, and file all Hot Work Permits; order forms when needed.
  • Audit plant safety programs against OSHA regulations and develop programs using OSHA Regulations and Framework Standards.
  • Assist in the Contractor Safety Program, develop new safety topics, provide training, and support the yearlong program.
  • Maintain organized recordkeeping systems.
  • Manage inspections of Working at Heights Harnesses with approved vendors.
  • Coordinate the exchange and inspection of Electricians' safety gloves.
  • Take responsibility for the annual inspection of all cranes and hoists with approved vendors.
  • In the absence of an EHS Manager, maintain the OSHA log, required EHS reporting, and coordinate with plant leadership.
  • Coordinate key safety program compliance with the Ammonia Safety Program.
  • Directly support Plant Safety and Environmental Pillars and provide EHS input to other pillars.
  • Support employee requests for shoe vouchers, PPE (e.g., Rx safety glasses), and other safety supplies.
  • Participate as a First Responder, provide initial First Aid, medical treatment, and assessment of employee injuries.
  • In the absence of the Plant Manager/EHS Support, follow the safety matrix to decide on transporting injured employees to medical facilities.
  • Fill out initial accident investigation forms and collaborate on corrective actions with supervisors.
  • Report correct information back to plant and departmental stakeholders.
  • Assist and support the Plant Manager on execution and maintenance of Workers' Compensation Cases.
  • Follow all safety rules, including LOTO, and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Ensure food product quality and safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 5 years’ experience within a food processing, bottling, liquid filling/blending, and/or consumer goods manufacturing/packing environment preferred.
  • 2 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Must be able to work any shift and weekends.
  • Safety certifications, safety training, or being part of a safety committee is preferred.
  • Must be able to present training to large groups of employees (previous experience preferred).
  • Strong computer literacy skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Willingness and flexibility to adapt to changing business needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional business-like appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to work in high temperatures (hot or cold), at heights, and with exposure to strong smells, dust, gases, fumes, and chemicals, requiring personal protective equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to see, sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, reach, bend, and twist.
  • Ability to ascend/descend.
  • Ability to pull, push, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.; 50+ lbs. with assistance.

Pay

Compensation range: $70,000 - $74,000 annually, with a 5% bonus based on annual results.
