Nature and Scope
The EHS Specialist is responsible for maintaining and improving current Environmental Health and Safety programs in an FDA regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment through implementation of identified EHS strategies.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepare, maintain, and follow procedures for the EHS systems and associated processes to adhere to company, OSHA, DEA and other federal, state, local requirements.
- Ensure alignment with all ISO 14001/45001 standards and requirements.
- Partner with EHS Management to audit EHS systems to baseline compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Regularly perform safety inspections of all Ohio sites, assessing risk, documenting hazards, implementing and overseeing corrective actions to continuously build knowledge to ongoing EHS strategies.
- Identifies improvements and relevant controls in various situations and proposes resolutions with approval from management.
- Affords assistance in Incident Management procedures, including maintenance and updates to all OSHA documentation (300 lot, 300A, 301), effectively manages injury claims, incident investigation, follow-up interviews with applicable personnel, and implements mitigating actions.
- Affords assistance in the development and enhancement of EHS programs and policies including policy revisions/updates/annual reviews.
- Maintains, updates, and manages EHS trainings of personnel, including employee curriculums, course assignments, medical surveillance programs, and closes out EHS trainings in a timely manner.
- Pairs with EHS Manager to develop Safety Data Sheets, oversees review and approval process for generated safety data sheets, assists with maintain Safety Data Sheet database.
- Issues, training, and management of personal protective equipment throughout the sites.
- Serves as first responder, incident commander with physical presence at all Ohio sites.
- Affords assistance in overseeing emergency response programs (Hazmat, First Aid/CPR/AED teams) including training/drills, and certification requirements.
- Maintains compliance with waste management requirements and policies, coordinates pick-ups, weekly RCRA inspections of waste storage areas, ensures proper labeling and inventory management.

- Partners with EHS manager to oversee safety committee activities including monthly safety meetings.
- Demonstrates continuous efforts for alignment of all sites under guidelines of EHS Manager.
- Applies practical knowledge to job area using prescribed guidelines or policies to analyze and resolve problems. Works under moderate supervision or with clear direction, with some latitude for independent judgement.
- Performs any other tasks/duties as assigned by management.
Education Requirements And Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or 2 -5 years equivalent experience in an EHS related role.
- Must be familiar with EHS and ISO 1440/45001 regulations and standards.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Applications, including Microsoft Project, Word, and Excel.
- Effective written oral and written communication skills, acute attention to detail, excellent time and project management skills, and the drive to complete projects thoroughly as required, as is the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-changing work environment.
- Must have good interpersonal relationship skills, strong presentation skills, and process improvement skills, as well as strong cross functional teamwork skills.
- Ability to clearly and concisely express thoughts in written procedures, protocols, and reports. Ability to write procedures that clearly define required tasks. Ability to proofread other’s work for accuracy. Ability to generate presentations/reports to explain and/or analyze areas of responsibility.
- Ability to travel to all ARI sites in central Ohio to perform EHS & DEA related tasks.
Physical Environment And Requirements
- Physically able to wear cleanroom/protective gowning and equipment, including but not limited to gowning, goggles, face shields, respirators, and protective gloves.
- PPE and Respirators are essential for the health and safety of employees.
- Employees must maintain a clean-shaven appearance each working shift to wear tight-fitting respirators properly.
- Employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
