ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER

About the role

The Town of Brookline DPW is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Environmental, Health and Safety Officer. This position supports the Department of Public Works across all divisions in its operations, services, programs, and construction. The Environmental, Health and Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing environmental, health, and safety programs, plans, and policies.

Responsibilities

• Supports the Department of Public Works across all divisions in its operations, services, programs, and construction.
• Fosters a culture of safety and personal responsibility at all levels within the organization through education, training, and outreach initiatives.
• Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations and implements best management practices.
• Safeguards the safety and health of employees, contractors, and the public by conducting accident evaluations, assessments, and follow-up to prevent workplace accidents and injuries.
• Oversees the proper storage, handling, documentation, labeling, and management of hazardous or regulated materials.
• Reviews and ensures compliance with environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations, and submits annual plans, reports, and documents to the respective state and federal agencies.
• Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in physical sciences, workplace safety, industrial hygiene, environmental, health and safety, or other related field.
• Five (5) years of professional experience in developing and/or administering organization-wide industrial hygiene and/or environmental, health and safety programs.
• Strong technical, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• A thorough working knowledge of environmental laws and occupational health safety standards, including laws, regulations, guidance documents, and codes of practice.
• Completion of OSHA 30-hour certification course required.
• Additional OSHA and safety certifications preferred.
• Massachusetts Class D license required.
• Commercial Driver’s License and hoisting license desirable.

Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $105,417 - $111,147. Brookline provides an excellent compensation and benefits package, including four weeks of vacation, GIC Health Insurance, Dental, and other tax-deferred benefits.
