Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the Role

Anthropic is hiring an EHS Manager, Data Center Construction and Operations to own environment, health, and safety across the full lifecycle of our data center sites — from construction and commissioning through to live operations. As we scale the physical infrastructure behind our research, this role ensures the high-hazard work of building and running data centers is done safely, by our partners and for our people.

This is a specialized, field-facing, program-ownership role, with contractor safety at its core. Most hands-on work at these sites is performed by general contractors, subcontractors, and specialty trades, so your impact comes through setting expectations, qualifying and overseeing those partners, and holding multi-employer worksites to our safety standards.

You'll be Anthropic's safety presence on the ground — through active construction, the transition of commissioning, and the shift into operational EHS once a site is live. You'll own these programs end-to-end today, and as our data center footprint grows, you may build and lead a team to support them. You'll partner closely with the EHS Lead, construction, infrastructure, operations, Security, and Legal teams, as well as contractor and operator organizations running the sites.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run contractor safety programs, including prequalification and selection, safety plan and method-statement review, site-specific orientation, high-hazard work permitting, and audits/inspections to verify compliance.
  • Set clear expectations, coordinate across general contractors and subcontractors, and hold all parties accountable for safety on multi-employer worksites.
  • Own EHS across construction, commissioning, and operations phases, addressing high-hazard exposures such as electrical systems, working at height, heavy equipment, cranes, rigging, excavation, and fire/life safety under OSHA construction (29 CFR 1926) and general industry (29 CFR 1910) standards.
  • Manage safety during energization and testing in commissioning, and transition programs to operational safety, including electrical safety (NFPA 70E), lockout/tagout, and arc flash.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and injuries, driving root-cause analysis and corrective actions, and maintain EHS recordkeeping and reporting, including OSHA requirements and contractor-injury tracking.
  • Serve as the owner’s safety representative, reviewing readiness, conducting site walks, escalating unsafe work, and stopping work when necessary.
  • Drive a consistent safety culture across geographically distributed sites, building emergency preparedness, running drills, and ensuring lessons learned are shared.
  • Select and manage external safety, industrial hygiene, and audit partners, with support from the EHS Lead.
  • Contribute to site design and safety standards to improve baseline safety for new builds.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of EHS experience, with significant time spent on construction, mission-critical, data center, or heavy industrial/operational projects.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in contractor and construction safety, including prequalification, safety plan review, high-hazard work permitting, and multi-employer worksite oversight.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction (29 CFR 1926) and general industry (29 CFR 1910) standards, plus electrical safety (NFPA 70E), lockout/tagout, and fall protection.
  • Comfortable being the safety authority on active worksites — making clear calls, holding contractors accountable, and stopping unsafe work.
  • Ability to build and run programs autonomously across multiple sites, prioritizing effectively in high-pressure environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to motivate and persuade contractors, operators, and cross-functional partners to engage with safety beyond minimum requirements.
  • Willingness to spend significant time in the field and travel to sites, adapting quickly as projects move through construction, commissioning, and operations.
  • Ability to write clear safety plans, playbooks, and program documents, and create engaging training and presentations.
  • Hands-on experience with software tools for contractor management, incident reporting, risk assessment, and related functions.

Qualifications

Strong candidates may also have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, construction management, engineering, or a related field.
  • Certifications such as CHST, CSP, ASP/GSP, or comparable US-recognized construction/safety credentials.
  • Direct experience with data center, mission-critical, or large capital construction projects.
  • Experience managing safety through commissioning and handover into operations.
  • Deep electrical safety expertise (NFPA 70E, arc flash, energized work).
  • Experience building a contractor safety program from scratch across distributed sites.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems).
  • Excellent computer skills — quick to learn new applications and systems at the user and/or administrator level.
