About the role
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager at SCN BestCo is responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of company EHS programs and systems. This role involves developing, maintaining, and implementing EHS policies and programs, managing and upgrading systems to track and evaluate work-related injuries and near misses, and ensuring compliance with various regulations.
Responsibilities
- Set expectations for EHS to ensure compliance of health and safety requirements and regulations enforced through OSHA, DOT, FDA, and other state and federal regulations.
- Absorb site leadership role for internally motivated safety values, where the team works together to promote organizational pride in safety, care for coworkers’ personal safety, and encourages discussion about safe and unsafe behaviors.
- Establish and maintain EHS metrics, recordkeeping, and communications.
- Manage and upgrade systems to track and evaluate work related injuries & near misses.
- Utilize historical and leading indicators to prioritize actions focused on continuous improvement.
- Regularly inspect, audit, and review safe work practices to ensure effectiveness and compliance with regulations and company policies.
- Develop, conduct, deliver and improve regulatory training programs to meet EHS requirements.
- Manage and implement the Accident/Exposure Reporting and Investigation program.
- Ensure the program prescribes methods and practices for reporting and investigating accidents/exposures.
- Support incident investigations and root cause analyses so that corrective and preventive actions can be identified, communicated globally, and implemented.
- Manage all federal, state, and local environmental programs (air; hazardous waste; SPCC; storm water; etc.) and permits to ensure compliance.
- Act as company representative with government agencies in environmental, safety, and health matters affecting the company.
- Review, monitor, and manage the claims process.
- Manage the early return to work and modified duty program, monitor and analyze accident and injury trends, identify areas for increased training and emphasis of accident prevention.
- Partner with Human Resources team on Workers' Compensation claim management.
- Compile, analyze, and report data relating to occupational and environmental health issues which are known or suspected of being real or potential risks to health including chemical exposure, smoke, fumes, noise, temperatures, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics.
- Collaborate with department leadership in the management of EHS-related activities including administering protective equipment, posting signage, addressing hazards, and providing employee training.
- Identify safety improvement projects on the production floor and coordinate cross-functional resources to complete projects and mitigate risks.
- Own EHS programs for PPE, powered industrial trucks, hearing conservation, lockout/tagout, fire prevention, machine safety, emergency response (in conjunction with facilities and engineering teams), and hazard communication.
- Utilize the Safety Committee (and SNC BestCo employees who are leaders in safety) where feasible to complete projects and mitigate risks.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in safety management, occupational environmental health and safety, or a related field. 5 years’ professional safety leadership experience in a manufacturing environment. Prior experience establishing a safety culture in a company. Strong record of accomplishment preventing injuries, developing/implementing robust processes and management systems, and building productive, collaborative relationships with internal/external business partners.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs): Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish. Knowledge of U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and CAL/OSHA regulations and standards and other non-regulatory safety standards applicable to the location. Excellent demonstrated leadership and project management skills, including the ability to lead teams, produce and maintain timelines, create dashboards, and track metrics, and assemble project information into clearly written reports that document findings, actions, and progress. Analytical, organized, and detail oriented. Able to prioritize tasks, utilize time efficiently, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated initiative to challenge current processes and work with the team to continuously improve. Strong computer systems skills including Microsoft Office Suite software and expert-level Microsoft Excel skills. Proficient in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and web-based software applications. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Skills
- Registered professional certification from a nationally recognized board (certified Safety Professional, certified Safety Auditor, OSHA 500, or similar certification).
- Certified First Aid/CPR Trainer status.
- HAZMAT training.
