Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Hart & Hickman, PC · Charlotte, NC · 3 wk ago

About the role

Hart & Hickman (H&H) is a growing, employee-focused environmental engineering and consulting firm serving clients across the Southeast since 1995. We are looking for an experienced safety professional to help lead our internal programs that keep our team safe while performing site assessments, remediation, drilling oversight, vapor intrusion investigations, industrial hygiene surveys, and compliance work.

This is a full-time, dedicated health and safety role with no utilization target—your focus is our people, not billable hours. You'll work alongside our Health & Safety Lead, taking ownership of major pieces of our internal program from day one, with a clear path to leading the program as you grow into it.

Responsibilities

  • Own and manage H&H's corporate health & safety program, including policies, SOPs, medical surveillance, respiratory protection, PPE, fleet and field safety, and regulatory compliance (OSHA 1910.120 and 1926)
  • Develop and review Site-specific Health & Safety Plans (HASPs) and Job Safety Analyses
  • Lead firm-wide safety training, including HAZWOPER refresher coordination, new-hire field safety onboarding, and competent-person programs
  • Conduct field safety audits across active project sites in the Carolinas
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, perform root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and maintain OSHA recordkeeping
  • Oversee subcontractor safety prequalification and oversight (drilling, remediation, and construction subs)
  • Serve as an in-house technical resource for project teams on health and safety questions

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of health and safety experience, with meaningful time supporting environmental consulting or a related industry
  • Deep working knowledge of HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120) and construction safety (29 CFR 1926)
  • Experience writing and reviewing site-specific HASPs and leading incident investigations
  • Strong training and communication skills—ability to engage scientists and engineers
  • Degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in environmental consulting
  • HAZWOPER trainer qualification
  • Experience with industrial hygiene fieldwork: air monitoring, noise, IAQ/mold, asbestos, or exposure assessment
  • CSP, CIH, CHST, ASP, or OHST certification—or interest in pursuing one with our support

Why This Role Is Different

You'll join a firm whose work you already understand, with direct access to leadership and a genuine mandate to improve how we operate. This role offers real ownership from day one and a deliberate succession path—as you grow, so does the scope. For the right person, this is a path to leading our health and safety practice at a firm that promotes from within.

Why H&H

We foster a positive work culture built on career and personal development, collaboration, and training. Our team works on challenging projects alongside experienced project managers and senior leaders, and we invest deliberately in developing well-rounded consultants who become trusted advisers to clients and future leaders of the firm.
