About the role

The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator works within the plant to ensure compliance with facility environmental permits, regulations, and company safety programs including FSMA, USDA, cGMP's, FDA, HACCP, PSM, and Finished Product requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Administers Darling Ingredient's Safety program, including:
    • Compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
    • Conducting CAL/OSHA safety training for new employees
    • Monthly and annual employee training
    • Monthly safety facility audits
    • Monthly safety meetings
    • Performing accident investigations and advising management on corrective actions
  • Builds, organizes, and maintains the facility's OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Programs (RMP), including:
    • Written and verbal communications with refrigeration operators, facility management, and corporate EHS
    • Tracking compliance audits, mechanical integrity, hazard analyses, incident investigations, and other EHS action items
  • Conducts employee training in environmental compliance, site inspections, sampling, log review, and report preparation for:
    • Air Permit
    • Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC)
    • cGMP's, HACCP, PSM, and FSMA (Food Safety) Compliance and Reporting
    • Solid & Hazardous Waste Management
    • Boiler Permits
    • Business and Operating Licenses
  • Performs tests on incoming and outgoing product, records results, and reports problems to management
  • Maintains lab equipment, conducts testing on all Finished Products, and manages lab supply inventory
  • Ensures all Finished Products meet specifications before shipment to customers
  • Ensures all employees are trained on cGMP's, HACCP, and FSMA requirements
  • Reviews plant documentation associated with Finished Product shipments and in-process control documents, addressing corrective actions as needed
  • Completes internal audits and corrective actions
  • Audits all plant daily documentation, approves documents, addresses corrective actions, and ensures completion
  • Ensures proper monitoring and operation of environmental control equipment (air, water)
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • PSM certification or must become certified upon hire through Darling-led or industry OSHA-recognized curriculum
  • Minimum 3 years of experience (5 years preferred) in quality assurance, food production, agriculture, or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience (5 years preferred) in a safety role, including PSM and OSHA compliance
  • Minimum 3 years of experience (5 years preferred) in an environmental role, including state and federal regulatory compliance
  • Valid driver's license and clear driving record; role involves periodic trips to Paducah, KY, with up to 25% travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety and Environmental, Industrial Management, or related field
  • Highly organized with superior time management skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated, able to multi-task, and works well in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch
  • Occasionally lifts up to 25 lbs
  • Occasionally pushes, pulls, or moves up to 100 lbs
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms
  • Occasional overnight travel by personal vehicle or airplane

Work Environment

Job functions are carried out in an office, plant, or field environment.
