About the Role

The Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking a well-qualified Environmental Health Program Supervisor to perform health inspections of various facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves providing information and education to facility owners and operators regarding compliance, overseeing the issuance and revocation of permits, and conducting in-person inspections to identify public health standard deficiencies. The position includes supervisory responsibilities over Environmental Health Specialists, such as assigning work, monitoring progress, providing training, and supporting professional development.

Responsibilities

• Performs administrative tasks such as maintaining records, gathering/documenting information, preparing resolutions, and updating systems to document and coordinate the work of the environmental health inspection unit.
• Communicates with individuals (e.g., citizens, inspectors, supervisors, other departments, and/or department managers) to represent the department, answer questions, and explain information (e.g., laws, codes, ordinances).
• Conducts health inspections of facilities, sites, and/or equipment by contacting property owners, collecting data samples, identifying hazards, and interpreting laws to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations.
• Assigns public health scores after completion of inspections to rate the overall level of compliance for inspection sites.
• Collects various samples (e.g., food, water, air) from inspection sites to identify relevant public health violations.
• Interprets relevant environmental laws and regulations to determine if inspection sites are in compliance with public health regulations.
• Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
• Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and/or training.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience working in the field of Environmental Health (e.g., performing environmental services inspections, identifying hazards, investigating environmental services complaints such as sewer systems, food establishments, or facility cleanliness).
• Valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional periods of standing, walking, lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment

Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting and during regular field visits to external places of business, residences, and construction worksites. Involves use of standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, and copiers.
