Environmental Health Consultant I/II-DEHE Community Environmental Health

About the role

ANTHC Environmental Health (EH) Consultants provide broad environmental public health services to the Anchorage Service Unit (ASU), which includes 40 communities in southcentral Alaska, Lake Iliamna, Kodiak Island, and the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands.

Responsibilities

• Traveling to remote villages to conduct surveys of clinics, Head Starts, landfills, and water/wastewater systems.
• Writing professional survey reports.
• Vaccinating pets against rabies.
• Providing training and technical assistance to Tribal health partners, Community Health Aides, utility and sanitation staff, and local staff and residents.
• Obtaining and maintaining a Fire Extinguisher Technician permit, Rabies Lay Vaccinator certification, State of Alaska Sanitary Surveyor certification, Backflow Prevention Device Tester certification, Food Protection Manager certification, and other related certifications.
• Assisting with conducting environmental public health research studies, including protocol development, survey tool creation, literature review, data collection, manuscript preparation, and project coordination.
• Supporting Tribal Water Center Activities, such as operator trainings, technical assistance, and water fluoridation.
• Assisting with identifying and securing external funding resources to support program needs.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Level I: An Associate's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field, plus two (2) years of non-supervisory Environmental Health experience.
• Level II: A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field, plus four (4) years of non-supervisory Environmental Health experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of principles of environmental health practice, including water and wastewater systems, water fluoridation, air quality, solid waste, food safety, child safety, etc.
• Knowledge of research principles and techniques.
• Skills in presentation and public speaking.
• Skills in technical and professional writing.
• Skills in working effectively with co-workers, representatives from regional Tribal organizations, and Native populations.
• Proficiency in computer use and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Skills

• Ability to interpret environmental sampling results.
• Ability to assist with conducting environmental public health research studies.
• Ability to identify and secure external funding resources.
• Ability to perform introductory environmental health technical and consultative services.
