Environmental Geologist or Scientist Mid-Level
Tetra Tech is adding a Mid-Level Environmental Scientist or Geologist to our field team based in Germantown, Md, with field work locations primarily in Frederick, Carroll and Baltimore counties. This position requires the employee to be a U.S. Citizen due to the projects they will be working on.
About the role
This position will provide mid-level geologist or scientist support for various environmental assessment and remediation projects. Work includes due diligence, report preparation, and environmental field work. Field work and travel is estimated to be 75%. Capable of assuming responsibility for routine to complex tasks and projects. Experience in leading field crews is desirable.
- Assume lead and supporting technical roles for projects.
- Record field data, write reports, generate figures and tables, manage data.
- Perform Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs).
- Conduct environmental due diligence and investigations at CERCLA, RCRA, and other impacted sites.
- Collect soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and waste samples using various sampling techniques.
- Plan and coordinate directly with subcontractors and field personnel.
- Assume supporting roles in proposals and marketing.
- Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in geology or environmental science is required; Master’s degree (MS/MA) is a plus but not required.
- 3-5 years of directly related professional experience and/or training in environmental assessment/remediation.
- Stormwater pollution prevention compliance experience is a plus.
- Erosion and Sediment Control compliance inspection experience is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to perform field work at various locations, approximately 75% of the time.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred; ability to obtain certification within 90 days is required.
- Background check required if the position necessitates a CAC card, CUI Enclave Access, and/or a Security Clearance.

- Sampling work may include lifting, maneuvering, positioning, and operating sampling/testing equipment (pumps, hoses, power cables, hand augers, sampling tools, etc.).
- Operation of field equipment and movement over rough terrain.

- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.

- Office work is in a typical office environment with controlled conditions.
- Field work involves a wide range of outdoor conditions, including adverse weather (high heat, extreme cold, precipitation) and unimproved job sites with dense vegetation, uneven ground, and physical obstacles.
- Project worksites are typically within the eastern United States but may include travel to sites across the U.S. and internationally.
- Field project durations may range from one day to several weeks.
Skills
- Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical documents, procedures, and government regulations.
- Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures suitable for client submittal.
- Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form; must be fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Ability to evaluate issues, solve practical problems, and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret and follow instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Strong technical, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge or experience in geosciences-related software, data evaluation software, electronic field data collection, and/or groundwater flow/contaminant transport modeling is desirable but not necessary.
