About the role

WSP is seeking an Environmental Engineer (Professional Engineer) for our Columbus, Ohio office. We also consider applicants for our Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky offices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing processes and infrastructure related to water supply, wastewater treatment, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, and pollution control.
  • Generate accurate and concise reports and documentation detailing field conditions.
  • Avoid and provide guidance regarding short- and long-term risks to ecological and human health.
  • Ensure responsibilities are executed and maintained at a quality level that meets or exceeds industry standards.
  • Support business development activities as part of your role within the team.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to provide strategic direction and support for existing client relationships.
  • Manage current and future projects, engage with clients daily to establish and guide the strategic direction for project execution.
  • Independently manage and execute projects to ensure compliance with established schedules.
  • Prepare technical proposals and reports, either in whole or in part, based on the size and complexity of each document.
  • Prepare technical reports and related documents and assist with business development.
  • Prepare components of investigation and engineering reports, such as work summaries, data summaries, engineering calculations, summary tables, figures, engineering drawings and specifications, and report text.
  • Conduct technical evaluations and provide recommendations as required.
  • Direct junior-level staff overseeing field activities, organize field work, assign tasks, and provide guidance to staff specialists in field task management.
  • Review contractor submittals, including equipment documentation, Work Plans, and QA/QC plans, and track payment applications, requests for information, change order requests, and general construction phase submittals.
  • Assist in subcontractor procurement and oversee field activities such as drilling (including DPT/Geoprobe, HSA, and Sonic), soil excavation, demolitions, and remediation system installations.
  • Perform moderately complex technical tasks within broad work scopes, as well as planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating project work for large-scale assignments.
  • Plan and conduct inspections and investigations of facilities and structures.
  • Motivate, train, and mentor junior staff assigned to your tasks or projects.
  • Manage small to mid-size projects, including project scoping, budget tracking, and resource management.
  • Work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond a typical work schedule.
  • Travel to project sites as needed, which may include overnight travel.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • 7–10 years of relevant experience.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Strong computer and writing skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to interact effectively with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond a typical work schedule.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites as necessary.
  • Excellent time management and compliance tracking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with technical and business writing, office automation, and communication software.
  • Proficiency with discipline-specific design software and engineering tools.
  • Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health and safety policies.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
