Environmental Engineer for Solid Waste
Summary of Work
As an Environmental Engineer in the Solid Waste Program within the Division of Waste Management at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, you will be a part of a team that protects and improves the environment by ensuring waste is managed, stored, and disposed of properly for the health and safety of our citizens.
Responsibilities
- Review and regulate a wide variety of solid waste facilities and related activities
- Evaluate construction plans, engineering specifications, and technical documentation
- Review and prepare permits for solid waste operations
- Analyze reports and inspection data to assess compliance with environmental control laws, regulations, and policies
- Conduct onsite inspections and field evaluations
- Prepare and monitor compliance activities and corrective actions
- Provide technical oversight, guidance, and training to stakeholders
- Enforce applicable rules and regulations related to the solid waste program
- Respond to inquiries from the public, community leaders, regulatory agencies, and business leaders regarding waste management practices and compliance requirements
Requirements
- Based on site in Bismarck, travel within the state, including occasional overnight stays, is part of the job (approximately 1–2 nights per month on average)
- Enjoy problem-solving and understanding how systems and processes work
- Be able to interpret complex engineering and scientific information, policies, and regulations and communicate them in a way that supports understanding and leads to compliance
- Be comfortable enforcing rules objectively, consistently, and fairly
- Have experience working with databases and spreadsheets
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.
- To be considered for an Environmental Engineer II, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in an engineering field and one (1) year of related experience. A master’s degree may substitute for one (1) year of work experience. Starting salary is $6275/month, depending on experience.
- To be considered for an Environmental Engineer I, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in an engineering field. Starting salary is $5976/month, depending on experience.
- Experience in solid waste management, landfill design, soil science, geology or hydrology is preferred.

Pay
To be considered for an Environmental Engineer II, starting salary is $6275/month, depending on experience.
To be considered for an Environmental Engineer I, starting salary is $5976/month, depending on experience.
