Responsibilities

  • Manufacturing Support:

    • Evaluate new manufacturing equipment, processes, and chemicals for environmental impacts and permitting requirements prior to introduction; integrate environmental review into management-of-change (MOC) and capital project processes.
    • Prepare, submit, and maintain environmental permits and registrations for manufacturing operations, including air quality approval orders/permits (Utah DAQ and other state agencies), stormwater (industrial MSGP/UPDES/NPDES), wastewater discharge, and hazardous waste generator requirements (RCRA).
    • Develop and maintain emissions inventories, calculations, and recordkeeping to support permit applications, compliance demonstrations, and annual reporting (e.g., air emissions inventories, Tier II, TRI, hazardous waste reports).
    • Manage hazardous and universal waste programs, including waste characterization, accumulation area compliance, manifesting, vendor audits, and waste minimization initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain facility environmental plans, including SPCC, SWPPP, and contingency/emergency response plans; conduct required inspections and training.
  • Field Services & Project Support (Multi-State):

    • Support environmental due diligence and site assessments for new project locations, including review of Phase I/II ESAs, wetlands, floodplain, and sensitive-receptor considerations. Secure environmental permits and approvals for project sites across multiple states, including construction stormwater permits (NPDES CGP and state equivalents), SWPPPs, dust control, noise, and local environmental requirements.
    • Provide environmental oversight during construction, installation, and commissioning activities — including contractor compliance, erosion and sediment control inspections, spill prevention, and waste management.
    • Track and interpret federal, state, and local environmental regulations across the company’s operating footprint (UT, OR, WA, ID, WY, CA, and new markets); advise project teams on jurisdiction-specific requirements and timelines.
  • Programs, Reporting & Continuous Improvement:

    • Serve as a primary point of contact with environmental regulatory agencies; manage inspections, information requests, and agency relationships.
    • Maintain compliance calendars, permit obligation tracking, and environmental management system (EMS) documentation; lead internal audits and drive closure of findings.
    • Partner with EHS, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to embed sustainability and compliance into product design, facility expansion, and field execution.
    • Develop and deliver environmental training for employees and contractors.
    • Support corporate sustainability initiatives, including data collection for energy, waste, water, and emissions metrics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 3–7 years of environmental engineering or compliance experience in manufacturing, construction, energy, or industrial settings.
  • Working knowledge of major federal environmental programs (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act/NPDES, RCRA, EPCRA, SPCC) and experience preparing permit applications and compliance reports.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting construction or field operations, including stormwater permitting and SWPPP implementation.
  • Strong project management, technical writing, and communication skills; ability to explain regulatory requirements to non-specialists.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25–40% to project sites and facilities across multiple states.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work on active construction and industrial sites.
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • PE license (or EIT working toward PE), CHMM, or similar professional credential.
  • Multi-state permitting experience, particularly in Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, or California.
  • Experience with energy storage, battery systems, renewable energy, utility infrastructure, or electrical equipment manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with environmental aspects of battery handling, storage, and end-of-life management.
  • Experience with EHS/EMS software platforms and ISO 14001-based management systems.
