Environmental Department Manager

The Environmental Department Manager is responsible for advancing the environmental business by strengthening existing client relationships, cultivating new clients, identifying emerging market opportunities, and expanding environmental service offerings across the region. The successful candidate will have a strong entrepreneurial mindset and a proven ability to drive revenue growth, develop and execute market strategies, and build high-performing teams. This leader will work collaboratively across disciplines to position HNTB for success, win new work, develop innovative environmental solutions, and deliver exceptional service to clients while growing the department's capabilities, staff, and market presence. This role is accountable for department performance, strategic growth initiatives, financial results, workforce development, and the successful delivery of environmental services.

Responsibilities

• Develop, monitor, and manage the department's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.
• Manage, grow, and professionally develop the discipline-specific planning department. Coordinate department activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects. Ensure staff development, mentoring, and training needs are met.
• Collaborate with other departments or groups within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
• Support the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and SSA process on project pursuits in the department and office, including development of department-level strategic planning strategies.
• Support the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities, including scope, work plan, and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the department.
• Support the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process, including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews, and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
• Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities.
• Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth.
• Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of department staff, including development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
• Actively manage assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget, and quality management) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications, and plan preparation.
• Lead multiple teams including the direct and indirect supervision of at least 15 but typically 17-20 or more employees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field and 10 years relevant experience including 2 years supervisory experience.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Engineering, Geology, Planning, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Professional certification or licensure such as Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
• 12+ years of progressively responsible experience in environmental consulting, infrastructure, transportation, or related markets.
• 4+ years of experience leading multidisciplinary environmental teams.
• Demonstrated success developing client relationships, leading business development efforts, and winning environmental and infrastructure-related projects.
• Proven experience growing a professional services practice, department, office, or environmental service line.
• Experience developing and executing strategic growth plans, including market expansion and new service offerings.
• Established relationships with transportation agencies, state and local governments, municipalities, transit agencies, and other infrastructure clients.
• Strong understanding of NEPA, environmental permitting, natural resources, cultural resources, ecological services, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience leading proposals, interviews, capture planning, and client account management activities.
• Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, utilization management, and profitability.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, and retain top talent while building a culture focused on collaboration, innovation, and growth.
